What age drew this?

I know these threads are annoying and I promise I won't leave it long before giving the answer.

What age would you say was the artist here? Ignoring the overlayed scribbles and just the dragon and the pirate (as they apparently are!)

7-8 years old.

Or 36 because I draw people just like that.

username819 · 11/06/2019 09:44

Dontbite- that’s what I was going to say, looks like something I’d draw!
7ish

Oh DontBite you've made me feel better. It was indeed me at age 39 who produced this. I've always said I can't draw but since DS has started to ask me for drawings I've become more aware of it.

Just wanted to get an idea of quite how childish my abilities are!!

I quite honestly thought "grown up" when I saw it. It's exactly how I draw at 33 too!

JuneFromBethesda · 11/06/2019 09:54

That’s pretty much my level of ability too Dappled (I’m 44 😄)

Good job 😉

Some more comforting answers, thank you! Grin

Oops. Should have read the comments. I am also a crap drawer!

frogsoup · 11/06/2019 09:57

It's actually pretty standard for adults to be stuck at about age 8 in drawing terms - you basically collect a set of very basic representations in your head of what a person or whatever and unless you learn to draw properly, you never really move past those. And even if you can draw, you still retain those stock images. I can draw well but my figures-drawn-for-the-kids don't look much more advanced than yours.

frogsoup · 11/06/2019 09:58

*what a person or whatever LOOKS LIKE

DappledThings · 11/06/2019 10:00

That's really interesting frogsoup, thank you

It looks like my 43 year old ability. Which I have always felt stopped at about 7 Grin

There's a book called 'Drawing on the right side of the brain' by Betty Edwards that explains the difference between drawing what we actually see and what we think we see (ie our 'brain image' of a person or a horse or whatever, that doesn't actually correspond at all to the reality). The argument is that moving to really 'seeing' is what makes you able to draw 'properly'. Some people do it naturally, others need more explicit teaching, but pretty much anyone can do it if they want. It was a pretty transformational book for me!

frogsoup · 11/06/2019 10:50

But equally, like Nottonight says, representational drawing isn't all where it's at. David Shrigley is a good example of how far you can get in the art world (and how expressive art can be) without giving two hoots for 'accuracy'!

sheshootssheimplores · 11/06/2019 10:53

I would say 7 or 8 too as I have pictures my mum kept and handed back and they look like that and have my age on them 🤭

If a three year old has done that I’d be VERY impressed 👌

AlunWynsKnee · 11/06/2019 11:02

I can draw. Not brilliantly but with a set of pencils and time I can produce something that looks OK. But if I had to draw something quickly with felt tips when the dc were little I would have done something like yours.

AlyssasBackRolls · 11/06/2019 11:25

That's an utterly charming dragon OP, you should be pleased with your efforts. Interesting that many adults can't draw - I suppose we don't play with crayons and felt tips once we're not kids any more so never really improve until we have our own and pick them up again! (Unless you're super talented or hobbyist drawing type person).
