Chicken pox in nappy area - tips?

One of my boys has chicken pox - he was dealing with it admirably until yesterday when it all became too much for him and he’s very upset, very itchy, and quite clearly had enough (can’t blame him).

Unfortunately the worst area is in his nappy area, mainly at the front, a massive cluster of very large blisters there. I can’t imagine how much it must her when he wees and poos (he’s still in nappies and not at all potty trained - he has ASD so can’t explain to him that he should use a potty instead even temporarily, or leave him nappyless).

I’m really worried about them getting infected when they burst and there’s poo and wee hanging around, even with frequent changes. Has anyone dealt with this and if so any tips? I’ve looked online but can’t find any advice.

There’s also one on his face under his eye that’s really red and a bit swollen and I’m not sure if I need to do anything to help that?

Would it be safe to put metanium or epaderm or something on there?

I spent as much time as possibly with my chap in the bath. The cooking water was the easiest way to keep him settled.

Head & Shoulders shampoo used as bubble bath is apparently brilliant for chicken pox, has to be the Classic Clean one though.

My DS was the same last week, I let him stay in the bath for as long as possible and then put virasoothe gel and bepanthen nappy cream on him and just made sure his bum was changed really regularly

He is over the worst now and his bum is healing nicely

Agree - my DD was absolutely covered everywhere - and I mean everywhere.

Cool bath with lots of bicarb in it. She was asking for them hourly (2.5yo with good language skills so obviously helped her a lot).

Is your DS old enough for piriton syrup - helps with the itching.

I used sudocrem on nappy chicken pox spots which I think helped, certainly didn't make it worse. If he could tolerate a bit of nappy off time, the fresh air might help too. Good luck x

Thanks everyone. I think the one on his face may be infected, it has really flared up. Will see how it looks after his nap and call the doctors if it’s bad. Giving him baths as often as possible but difficult with twins as the other isn’t a fan!

Piriton and calpol (and poxclin or virasoothe) help a little but they wear off so much before the next dose of due. He was falling asleep so I’ve put him down for his nap early.

Ugh, this is horrible!

The really thick, yellow clay Metanium is good for ones in the nappy area. DS had some really sore ones on his bottom when he had it so at every nappy change I gave them a gentle clean with plain water and cotton wool, patted dry, and then put a layer of metanium over the top to protect them. Lots of nappy off time helped too, I sat him on one of those big blue and white puppy mats to absorb any accidents, and lots of time in oat baths.

We've just gone through this with ours. My boy was covered on his bottom- lots of Sudocream, oat and bicarbonate of soda baths, poxclin

SinkGirl · 11/06/2019 12:08

Thanks, will try some metanium when he wakes up. Poor things, I knew it would be bad but I’ve never seen him so upset.

Do some of these look infected? I have no idea what they’re meant to look like when they are starting to scab. He’s still getting bloody new ones and this is day 5 now, feels like it’s never going to end. He’s only really seemed very unwell since yesterday though

Oh poor boy
I've heard good things about oat baths , bicarb baths and head and shoulders baths
Would your other one be safe to have a tablet or something in the bathroom if he didn't want to to have a bath to ?

Emmabryant123 · 11/06/2019 17:02

Anything to get you through this :)
Hope his over the worst soon

Both my boys had infected spots with the pox. Some oral antibiotics and a cream helped a lot. Put porridge oats in a sieve and hold under the tap as you fill the bath. Really good for the itching.

SinkGirl · 11/06/2019 20:01

Thanks all - we had an awful afternoon, his temp shot up to 40.9 and he was so unwell. By the time the GP called me he had picked up luckily.

Oat baths help, I’ve got some Eurax and head and shoulders coming tomorrow. If he’s bad tonight I’ll take him to the GP first thing (or sooner if things get worse)
