Is there anywhere I can buy butteries in SE England?

I've just been to Scotland on holiday and rediscovered butteries (butter rolls/Aberdeen rolls/rowies) which I'd forgotten I'd loved on childhood holidays.

Is there anywhere I can buy them down south?

I’ve never seen them outside of Scotland. Even though you can get them in Tesco in Scotland.. Same as stotties. In Newcastle you can get them in supermarkets as well as (obviously) Greggs but nowhere else, Tragic.

After I moved to the north-east of Scotland, I used to take rowies to my grandad down in Bath because he used to live in Aberdeen but couldn't find them when he moved down there. It became a bit of a tradition at Christmas!

Sorry, not helpful at all! Good luck with your search.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/06/2019 22:05

OMG I want one now. Google tells me John Davidsons butchers and Rowies.Scot sell online, I wonder if they will be as good after a journey through the post though?! Smile

I may have to try the online route but the price of delivery compared to what they cost is a bit daft.

The other option is to try home baking 😂. Perhaps once I realise how much butter is in them it might put me off.

I'm sure I've seen "Scottish Morning Rolls" in Tesco and / or the Co Op in the East Midlands.

Blankiefan · 10/06/2019 22:24

Oh lovely. I've not had a rowie since my university years (some decades ago). There was nothing like a freshly baked rowie from Thaines bakery on George Street when they turned out the clubs and the bakery opened at 3am...

Misses the point of the thread

redeyetonowheregood · 10/06/2019 22:42

My goodness Blankie, your post has stirred memories! My best friend lived on George Street and we used to totter up there many a night. I lived in Rosemount. Trying but failing to remember the name of the bakery we used to get macaroni pies from at 3am on the way home...

AlecOrAlonzo · 10/06/2019 22:53

Thain's - Say Aye Tae a' Pie!

PickleSarnie · 10/06/2019 22:58

I used to get a macaroni pie from the bakers on George St BlankiefanTasted so nice at 3am whilst a wee bit blootered. Tried one a couple of years ago sober and it wasn't anywhere near as nice.

If you are ever in London, theres a food market on certain days outside the front of Kings Cross. They sell butteries there.

MightyAtlantic · 10/06/2019 23:04

I can get rowies any day of the week so I'm thinking there might be a wee mail order business opportunity for me here! I'm sure if I just stick on address labels and a first class stamp, they'll get there just fine! Wink
Seriously though OP, if you are in need of a fix PM me and I'll happily send you some.

Dh used to work "dahnsarf" and guess who got lumbered with the Rowie list for his contacts? I used to be such a good wife :o

AlecOrAlonzo · 10/06/2019 23:49

If you are in Keith get your baked goods from the Strathisla Bakery. Finest pies in Moray.

Yes, I've checked.

David Bowie's son Duncan resorted to baking his own! www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/news/local/theyre-evil-bricks-of-tasty-hollywood-film-director-duncan-jones-tells-of-love-for-rowies/

Dieu · 11/06/2019 00:54

I'm in Edinburgh, and have never seen them outside of Aberdeenshire.

I do have a friend who bulk buys butteries whenever he visits his parents up there, and then freezes them.

SoManyMoons · 11/06/2019 01:47

I misread your post and thought WTF would someone be looking to buy butterflies 🦋 Grin

Blankiefan · 11/06/2019 06:16

Oh - the macaroni pies... we used to buy two as you always spilled the contents of one whilst stumbling home.

And the queue between 2am when everything closed and 3am when Thains opened. It was quite the social scene - many a last minute pull happened in that queue!

Fun times...

@redeyetonowheregood

I spent my childhood up until the age of 24/25 in rosemount.. my nanna and grandad lived there in the flats next to the pub on the corner thats now been knocked down :(

Biscuitsdisappear · 27/08/2020 22:56

Butteries from Sinclairs in Huntly and white pudding from Scots the butchers. I used to take orders back down south.

Potionqueen · 28/08/2020 14:37

Omg I loved butteries. Used to have them as a student midwife in Inverness.
