Alternatives to ring resizing

Sorry in advance for a very dull thread. Is there an alternative to having a ring resized if it's too big? I have been wearing my late husband's wedding ring on my ring finger, but it's way too big. Until now I have used my engagement ring to keep it in place (the stone setting on it is quite large) but I've lost so much weight since DH died and it's still dropping off, and my engagement ring is now too loose as well. The cremation ring I had made with his ashes is loose too. That's engraved in the back and I wouldn't want to lose the engraving.

I don't want to have them resized, particularly not his ring or the cremation ring, but is there anything else? I tried one of those silicone spring things but it kept twizzling loose. I don't really want to have to take them off completely but that may be my only option Sad

The wedding ring is important because he took it off his own finger, put it on mine and kissed it before he died, and I want to keep it exactly as he had it. I know that's silly and sentimental.

Nothing silly about it Thanks

Ring clips and Snuggie type things are the only temporary solutions I'm aware of. Could you wear them on a chain for a little while?

Spam88 · 10/06/2019 15:01

Or wear them on different fingers? I know it's not quite the same.

I could put them on a chain, but I don't think it would feel the same. Where would I get a clip from? It wouldn't damage the ring?

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP. That's not silly and sentimental at all - I would feel exactly the same.

There's quite a few methods a jeweller could use - some are listed here: www.heirloom.london/solutions-when-your-ring-spins/

I would take them in to a reputable local independent jeweller and ask their advice.

Your other option is to wear them on a chain as a necklace.

I just googled ring clips. They seem to generally be silver, so depends what material the rings are. There are a few different silicon/plastic things as well other than the spiral ones which you could try, but I've never used any so don't know if they'll be any better. The ring clips look very uncomfortable though I have to say!

I had a ring with a clip thing in it but it wasn't a huge amount too big.
I wouldn't fancy wearing one in a ring that was many sizes bigger as it would irritate due to the spaces between fingers.

Thanks, that's a great idea.

don'tcallmeshirley that's the problem, his ring was huge to start with and now it is comedy too big. I will have to see what a jeweller suggests I think. It would feel wrong to take it off but I don't want to lose it. It fits over the top of my eternity ring with room to spare.

I had some little nuggets soldered onto the inside of my engagement ring when it kept twiddling round. You can get them removed if your fingers increase in size again. I'm so sorry for your loss and wish you well for the future.

when I had my wedding ring resized, they sort of 'squashed' it smaller,, so that all of the ring was still there, if that makes sense. This was at the jewellery quarter in Birmingham

Soola · 10/06/2019 15:41

If there is an excessive amount of gold left over I would have it resized smaller so that a piece is removed from the back and if there is enough gold left over I would have that made into a slim band that sits over the top of the main ring so that they are together.

But I do understand you don’t want to alter it.

Mumof1andacat · 10/06/2019 15:45

Maybe the gold could be changed/melted to make a pendant

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/06/2019 15:48

I had a plastic spring thing from Amazon that worked when my ring was three sizes too big, but I was petrified of it falling off. They didn't unswirl, though. I wore it on my chain if I was using my hands a lot, close to my heart and all that.

I had it resized with a laser in the jewellery quarter, so it fits better now, although I've lost more weight so it's a bit bigger than it was last month.

I can completely see why you don't want to take it off or resize it.

I'm so sorry for your loss Thanks

Thank you. Might be worth a visit to the JQ, the rings came from there (apart from the cremation ring). I know I needed to lose weight but I wish it was coming off my bum and not my fingers!
