Chicken that's been in freezer since October...

Ok to eat? I've spotted it lurking under something - didn't realise it was there! It's just a fridge freezer as opposed to a big deep freeze. Can't see a star rating but it seems to be -18 degrees...

I wouldn't eat it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/06/2019 12:29

I would. If the freezer has been working fine, and the chicken was appropriately wrapped, it will be fine.

DecumusScotti · 10/06/2019 12:29

Assuming it was safe to eat when it went in and hasn’t had the chance to defrost, it’ll be safe to eat. The quality might have deteriorated a bit (might have dried out), but it will probably be absolutely fine. No fucking way would I chuck it.

It's still in the supermarket sealed plastic pack, WonderDog...

I would. In a proper freezer (not a freezer compartment of a fridge) if it keeps a month it’ll keep a year or two.

RestingBitchFaced · 10/06/2019 12:36

I wouldn't think twice about eating it

x2boys · 10/06/2019 12:40

I ate chicken legs that had been in the freezer for about 18 months,it was fine but the texture was a bit rougher.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/06/2019 12:48

I'd expect it to be dry and tougher but I'd eat it if it was fine when it went in.

amusedbush · 10/06/2019 13:02

I wouldn't think twice. It will be fine.

eurochick · 10/06/2019 13:19

I wouldn't think twice about it. If it has freezer burn the texture might be tough but in a curry or something it would be fine.

Backwoodsgirl · 10/06/2019 13:26

I wouldn’t question it. We have food in our freezer from 2015 we are still eating our way through

listsandbudgets · 10/06/2019 13:59

I would without question.

Defrost Put it whle a casserole dish with lots of leeks, carrots, celery. A good measure of white wine and some tarragon if you've got any and shove it in the oven for a few hours on a low heat. Stir in some cream towards the end and serve with roast potatoes or mash.

That will keep it moist and will taste nice too :)

listsandbudgets · 10/06/2019 14:01

^^^ or just use a slow cooker if you have one

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/06/2019 14:03

Absolutely no problem.

I found a pot of yogurt in my fridge yesterday, best before 31/01/19 and had quite a bit before realising. All fine.

bloodywhitecat · 10/06/2019 14:04

I wouldn't even think twice about using it, I have things without a use-by date in my freezer as I tend to buy my meat from a local butcher so I have no idea how long stuff has been in there.

Hmmmbop · 10/06/2019 15:07

I have absolutely no idea how long anything has been in my freezer!

powershowerforanhour · 10/06/2019 15:45

I'd eat it unless it was freezer burned to shite.

EuromumAussiekid · 11/06/2019 00:39

I probably wouldn't as it's not a proper freezer. But I am a bit paranoid about food poisoning in general.

DramaAlpaca · 11/06/2019 00:42

Of course it's OK. A fridge freezer at -18 degrees is absolutely a proper freezer. Eat it & don't worry. Defrost safely first, of course.

bloodywhitecat · 11/06/2019 12:54

@EuromumAussiekid Are you thinking of an icebox within a fridge? A fridge/freezer which is two totally separate compartments, one on top of the other with separate doors for each compartment.

EuromumAussiekid · 11/06/2019 15:41

@bloodywhitecat yes I am thinking of an ice box on top of the fridge.

EuromumAussiekid · 11/06/2019 15:42

I think I would eat it not that I realise it is a proper freezer and not just a box on top of a fridge

Shadow1234 · 11/06/2019 19:18

My freezer has pictures of various food etched on the inside of the door, and tells me how long each product can stay in the freezer. A whole frozen chicken is marked as 6-9 months. Have you checked to see if you have this feature and just not realised (because I had to point this out to my daughter the other day - she never thought to look).

Shadow1234 · 11/06/2019 19:20

Cross post - I thought you meant a 50/50 fridge freezer as opposed to a chest freezer. I wouldn't know about a compartment type freezer.
