What do you take for your Hayfever? Does it work?

I take Cetirizine - it takes the edge off the sneezing and runny nose, but doesn't help with the itchy eyes. They are so bad this year! I'm trying Sodium Cromoglycate drops (Opticrom preservative free) but they aren't keeping it under control.

Does anyone have a miracle cure? I am prepared to try Voodoo at this point.

Fexofenadine is the God Tier of antihistamines. And a sinus rinse once or twice a day. Trust me Grin

Myusernameismud · 09/06/2019 17:24

I should add, it's prescription only but most GPS are happy to prescribe it over the phone, no need for an appt.

ScreamingLadySutch · 09/06/2019 17:27

Flixanase. Now OTC.

1 spray up each nostril once a day - by 5 days you will forget that you were ever allergic to anything. (Then you take it every 2 or 3 days).

The trouble with the tablets, is that they go round the whole body and have to be metabolised by your liver. This is a steroid in micrograms that is topical to the eyes nose and throat.

I don't mind giving my liver a workout, but since I can buy Flixonase OTC, I'll start with that, and progress to Fexofenadine if necessary.

I need to work on my sinus rinsing technique - last time I think I ended up drinking my own diluted snot Sad.

That's true screaming I have lots of allergies, mostly airborne so I take Fexo every morning all year round. I've used a couple of nasal sprays too, which all work well but I've found the effect is far greater if I'm doing regular sinus rinses too. Sort of cleans everything out before, plus it gets rid of any pollen lurking in there.

Myusernameismud · 09/06/2019 17:37

Tawdry you need to keep your mouth open when you do it. There's videos on YouTube Grin I was so freaked out by the idea when the asthma nurse gave me the neilmed bottle, but after I'd finally plucked up the courage to do it, it felt amazing and its a game changer!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 17/06/2019 22:10

I got Fexofenadine (online, hope it is real), but it's not working at all! My nose is literally running like a tap. I'm doing the sinus washing, but I suppose it can't help me when I'm outside?

May have to resort to the steroids. I am dying here.

Take piriton all the year round now we have dogs and they bring in pollen all summer then leaf mould spores the rest of the year. I have inhalers for the wheezing. You all have my sympathy.

cantkeepawayforever · 17/06/2019 22:16

Loratidine.

For some reason, it works when nothing else ever has.

i can offer no pharmacological reason for this, but it is marvellous.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 17/06/2019 22:17

Actually today I'm taking Piriton on top of the Fexofenadine (still no use).

Couldn't hack this all year round at all.

OP posts:
Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 17/06/2019 22:21

I took Loratadine before but it didn't work any better than the others, and I was getting irregular heartbeats, so I changed to Cetirizine. Maybe next year I should fork out for Grazax.

Nikhedonia · 17/06/2019 22:21

Chloraphenamine, boots have an own brand version.

It's not a one a day, so I use a few of them every 4-6 hours and cetirizine with it if it's really bad.

TuckMyWin · 17/06/2019 22:21

Acrivistine. It's in the Benadryl non once a day tablets. On good days I only need one. Days like today I'm up to 3. Not cheap but often on offer. I'm considering adding eye drops after today though, as my eyes are still suffering a bit- but I've spent a lot of time outside today.

Bonkersblond · 17/06/2019 22:22

Wh

Redpostbox · 17/06/2019 22:23

Boots own brand antihistamines (cheaper but just as good as the big brands).
Dont hang clothes outside on the line.
Don't have windows open in the late afternoon/evening.
Local honey (not sure this helps but it tastes nice).
Reduces my symptoms but doesn't cure them completely.

Bonkersblond · 17/06/2019 22:26

How many milligrams is your fenofexadine, DS15, quite a big lad has been prescribed 180mg once a day, DD however takes 30mg twice a day.

Ilikesweetpeas · 17/06/2019 22:29

Fexodenadine which is usually great but I'm struggling today especially with my eyes

Jsmith99 · 17/06/2019 22:29

Loratadine. I tried Citerazine, but it made me drowsy.

HoppityChicken · 17/06/2019 22:29

Piriton - interesting fact, dogs can have Piriton for allergies too. I also cut out dairy so less snotty.

Isitmeorhimthistime · 17/06/2019 22:32

I get like this too I have very bad rhinitis
The neilmed only makes my rhinitis worse and fezofenide helps more than any other drug but it still doesn't take it all away.

Myusernameismud · 17/06/2019 22:33

I take 180mg of Fexo twice a day, up to 3 times if really bad, but that's on allergy docs orders, GP will only recommend once a day.

I have been dying today, I don't get runny nose or eyes, pollen just triggers my asthma so I've been wheezing something shocking today. I work in Early Years so on nice days we are outside basically all day. Grass pollen levels were really high in east anglia so that'll be what did it. It's the first time this year I've had to take 3 Fexo and half emptied a ventolin too!

Flatwhite101 · 17/06/2019 22:35

Not very helpful now, but I find it's best to start with everything well before you know you'll get any symptoms. I get my symptoms in June/July mainly, but start taking certirizine every day from start of May. On top of that start with Beconaise nasal spray every day too a bit closer. Find it works a lot better as gives it all a chance to build up and damp down your immune response. That said, I don't have any side effects and seem to tolerate well. If bad I can take Loratidine on top of that lot as well, as slightly different mechanism of action.

Soola · 17/06/2019 22:36

I have the Opticrom eyesdrops and Beconase nasal spray.

But I accidentally bought Becodefence recently and that is complete crap and momentarily hurts!

This year I seem to have it worse than the last couple of years so have ordered some cetirizine from Amazon.

I can get my eyes and nose under control more or less but the itchy roof of my mouth drives me potty!

I have to be careful with tablets as even non drowsy make me drowsy! I find that taking one a day tablets works better for me if I break in half and take one in the morning and then one in the afternoon.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 17/06/2019 22:39

I'm taking 120mg Fexofenadine (maybe I get less for being 8.5 stone?!), and I'm taking the Piriton every 6 hours. And I'm using the eye drops, but still itchy.

I wasn't even frolicking in a meadow! I was on the Victoria line, and in an office all day.

@Myusernameismud if you are using that much ventolin, please see your gp asap. you need different meds. for this level of problem.
