Curtains - and their flip side?

Boring question, but what wording or term should I use if I want to find curtains online that are the same colour/pattern on boths sides? And why can't I find any at all in any shops I've looked at near me?

I've just opened the package of the unlined curtains I bought online that I thought would be safe from the pictures and description (and lack of lining), but no. It's a weird-arse one-sided fabric that is totally white on the flip side and looks like a lined curtain.

Can't say I've even seen double side curtains u less they are really thin ones?

Bamaluz · 09/06/2019 14:06

The fabric is always one sided, that's why people use linings to make the inside look better.

Try searching reversible curtains, although whether you will find the same pattern on each side instead of a different pattern in not sure

But the linings I see all look horrible?

Embarrasingly I'm nearly 40 and this is the first time ever I am buying curtains. So far I have always used some from the massive pile of inherited curtains from both of my grandmothers, or ones I nicked from my DM as a youth. I'm not from the UK, and curtain linings were not a thing where I'm from, so people used nice, double side woven fabrics. Hence feeling lost with this.

I'll try having a look for reversible ones, thanks. Not too bothered if the other side is a different pattern, as long as it's not white and doesn't obviously look like a lining.

Meanwhile DH is stopping me from binning the stupid-fecking-ugly curtains (which are actually very nice on one side) and is trying to tell me they're fine. Hmph.

How often do you stand outside, looking at your windows with the curtains closed in order to see the linings? The answer is hardly ever so I really wouldn't worry about this. Now I have known someone hang their curtains the wrong way round with the pattern facing outwards to the street, but they were definitely a one off!

Mumbaikar · 09/06/2019 14:28

I think people who were bothered about appearances used to hang the pattern side outwards in the past. So the neighbours saw the good side. That might be an option for you.

Soola · 09/06/2019 14:31

I seem to recall the blackout curtains we had on a child’s bedroom years ago was the same both sides.

Not really, but I would see them every time I came and went from my house, and feel that little bit of simmering hate every time, I think. Blush It wouldn't be an issue if I kept them wide open during the day, but they're for a room where we both work a lot during the day and prefer not to have the sun in when we do, so the curtains are closed or half-closed a lot.

Definitely not an option for me. I would absolutely not want to look at it.

We have these curtains. Not sure what the fabric is sorry. The light side is the good side and the dark side is the flip side. They are unlined but we have voices behind them.

This might be what you are looking for, maybe someone can identify the fabric type?

Voices behind your curtains?

Get Derek Acorah in!

Pipandmum · 09/06/2019 15:05

Well the answer is to get them made! I get all my curtains and blinds made and it’s often cheaper than buying ready made (as I can choose and buy the fabric).

poopypants · 09/06/2019 15:07

The back side of curtains fade in the sun. That's why we have linings and why they are pale. I don't know why you find pale white or cream linings so unattractive. They just look like pale curtains. It's not like linings have some weird pattern in them. They just look like plain curtain from the outside of the house.

RubberTreePlant · 09/06/2019 15:17

'Self-lined'?

Assuming they exist. I can't recall ever seeing any.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 09/06/2019 15:18

buy them double width and fold them in half, sew up edge, matching curtains inside and out

buy two pairs, and hang them up together, one facing out, the other facing in.

RubberTreePlant · 09/06/2019 15:20

Okay, I take it back. Self-lined is a thing. At least in the States-

SystolicSyster · 09/06/2019 15:23

Mumbaikar - yes, that's the kind most of my ancient curtains are like, or just a thicker one-colour fabric etc.

Yes, of course they fade in the sun, but it's not that noticeable. The curtains I'm about to chuck have been in use on and off since the 70s, and while one side is more faded than the other, it's only now starting to look a bit rubbish.

TBH, I don't really know why I hate the white look. I think it's just a taste thing? To me they look like bedsheets, and especially if closed during the day just don't look nice at all. I've obviously not noticed other people's lined curtains that much in all my years in the UK, since I'm only now realising they're such a norm.

I that case if you are in the UK you could have a look in Dunelm they make curtains. We got ours abroad but I think any curtain shop could make them.

Mumbaikar · 09/06/2019 16:21

*In that case...

Carrie36 · 05/11/2022 14:02

I have to say that I totally agree that lined curtains look horrible from outside, they look like someone has hung sheets in the window! The old curtains in our house are all nice thick single sheets of material, they are insulating and keep the light out, they have faded slightly on the outside but look way nicer than lined ones. Unfortunately our cat has ripped one pair to shreds and I cannot find similar curtains anywhere, they are all lined or thin.

tootiredtobother · 05/11/2022 14:03

self- lined is what I call them and I make them
