Have you ever saved a life?

I have managed to save 3 lives, just wondering how common it is?

1st was on my way home from work and I have to cross over a high bridge, there was a young man contemplating jumping off. He was surprisingly calm. I called the police and stayed with him until help arrived. I still think of him and hope he is in a better place mentally.

Second my next door neighbour had a fall, I was knocking and he wouldn't answer, kept shouting that he was fine. Turns out he had been naked on the kitchen floor all night. I had to get the fire service to break in his door. He was on hospital for 5 months!

Third was a lady in the hairdressers being really aggressive and rude. When she left the girls were saying how unlike her it was and how lovely she is usually. I followed her out as she was getting into her car to drive home and asked if she was diabetic. Turns out she was and was hypo, 1.6 which is very low. If she had driven that car she would have likely crashed.

So have any of you saved a life?

On the way back from sitting with my aunt as she passed away in the hospice, was around 4am in winter. A motorcyclist went past us. As we carried on I saw he had come off his bike on a bend by some crossroads. I got my mum to stop the car and jumped out and spoke to him. His bike had landed on his leg and ankle so couldn't move. I called the ambulance and got my mum to block her side of the road with hazards on. Luckily a taxi came the other way so he blocked some of the road with his car too. Was a sad and bizarre night.

I don’t mean to be a kill joy but to the people who’ve stopped at car accidents and “got them out” - unless the vehicle is on fire or the casualty is in respiratory distress, please don’t move them - there could be neck or spinal injuries that you make much worse by removing them from the vehicle without the proper support.

I had to resuscitate my son when he was 4 weeks old. Worst experience of my entire life.

Fenella I couldn't think of anything worse!! Was he ok after it? No lasting effects?

Loads of animals but never a human!

Resuscitated a 4 year old successfully.

Motorbike accident outside our home the other week, motorcycle doing 60, car pulled out from a blind junction. Biker escaped with fairly minor injuries all things considered but it did bring back horrible memories of a 4 year old I saw hit by a car. I was first on the scene both times, the biker had a lucky escape, the 4 year old still haunts me to this day.

@KnickyKnackyNooNoo mercifully yes, he’s fine. Me, not so much, but he is fine. It’s been 2 years now and I still check he’s breathing far more than is healthy!

Having been a nurse in A&E for years I have been part of a resus team on many occasions. I have also been under a tube train with patients on two occasions to set up an IV line for fluids and drugs. Not because I bravely volunteered but because being the smallest on the team I could fit into the restricted space better than anyone else.

I haven’t but I just wanted to say thank you to all the people donating blood. I received several transfusions after haemorrhaging during labour and this most certainly saved my life.

Stopped a child running into a busy road while their mum was unpacking the car boot

Talked people out of committing suicide more times than I can remember

My Dad...I found him Cheyne Stoking and helped him maintain his airway until the paramedics arrived. I didn’t even know until then that people could survive past the point of Cheyne Stoking and was sure he would die. He went on to live a further seven years 👍

We were on holiday with our first 3 boys, ds1 was about 6 years old, ds2 about 4 years old and ds3 a few months old. We were making good use of the hotel pool, ds1 and ds2 went off with dh and I had baby ds3. I didn't have my glasses on and even though i am as blind as a bat without them i could tell a young child had jumped in the deep end of the pool opposite me and went under the water, clearly not able to swim.

I swam over with ds3 and as I got closer realised it was ds2 who had jumped in! Knowing he couldn't swim I grabbed him and somehow managed to tuck ds2 and ds3 under one arm so I could drag us all to the side with my free arm. I still don't know how I managed it, but dh won't forget the 'telling off' he got for losing sight of ds2 at the pool.

So I suppose I saved my own son's life.
