My mum's house roof needed to be painted so we contacted a local handyman who does this and paid him to clean the roof, replace broken slates, and paint it. He ordered paint online which he's used on other roofs. Did a decent job, it looked good.
Less than a year later, the paint is flaking off and the faded roof is showing through.
The handyman wants us to replace the slates, saying they're old and need replacing. We think yes, they're old, but they don't need replacing yet.
The handyman contacted the paint company, who said it must have been a faulty batch and replaced the paint - they refused to refund, saying there were various reasons this might have happened and it was not necessarily because of the paint.
The handyman has quoted to repaint the roof (obviously for less than before as he won't have to clean/replace slates again). However I don't want it repainted with the replacement paint that was sent. I am scared the same thing will happen again. Plus the paint is a solar reflecting paint and my mum remarked that it had looked quite thin. The house is on the north west coast of the Western Isles in Scotland, we think solar reflecting paint is not necessary and it should be a thicker, more protective paint for the tiles.
So, can anyone advise on the type of paint we should be looking at, please? We understand it will be expensive - the solar reflecting paint cost £450 odd for 100ltrs, which did 2 coats, and I'd be looking to pay say £600-700 for something that lasts more than that one!
