Hospital stay 'hamper'

WashingATiger · 08/06/2019 19:21

Not sure if this is the best board to put this on but, here goes!
My dad is going in to hospital for a three/four week stay. He'll have to stay in his own room for the whole time and potentially could be quite tired and low. He's not looking forward to it at all. Right up to being ill he's been very active and outside a lot.
I want to try and make him up some sort of box with things to do / entertain him / etc...
Does have anyone have any idea? It's for part of his cancer treatment so I've got some sugar free sweets (he's also diabetic) and a couple of car magazines.. I don't know what will be useful or appreciated!
Thank you in advance!

I guess you know what he likes and dislikes but possible suggestions are:

  • cartons or small bottles of sugar free drinks (hospitals tend to be hot)
  • savoury snacks like nuts and crackers
  • puzzle books
  • a reading book
  • a note pad
  • wet wipes for freshening up
  • nice shower gel.
Hope that helps.

Pyjamas or couple of pairs of lounge pants and T-shirts

Drinks cartons

Depending on his treatment maybe a hand cream or lip balm. Not usually seen as typical male items but his skin may dry out

Good quality wireless noise cancelling headphones

This is a lovely idea.
A portable radio.
Audio books.
Private eye magazine

Sometimes it's the things you don't know you would like. I got a copy of Hello and nearly cried as it was the last mag I would pick (hormonal and emotional) and it was perfect. No brain required and surprisingly funny. I am not suggesting you get him this.. just that it meant a great deal to me and I remember it 9 yrs later and it was just such a small thing.

I'm in hospital just now and have been for a few days. My suggestions are:

Magazines
Books
Puzzle book and pen
Tablet and earphones
Phone and charger
Water wipes
Towel and proper toiletries
Snacks and drinks
Hand gel
A friend gave me a box of mini jigsaws.
Plastic bag for dirty washing
Slippers and PJ's (obvs)

As well as other things suggested - travel versions of board games?

A pack of cards

Not sure what your budget is but I'm in hospital a lot with the dc's and my portable DVD player has been amazing and so has my kindle fire.

Does your Dad have a partner? If he does it might be nice to do something for them. I did a bag of bits for my grandad's dw when he was in hospital (sweets, puzzle books, pens etc all in a bag with her name on. She was touched that someone had thought of her as I find the carer often gets overlooked. If it's you who will be looking after your Dad I hope someone does something nice for you.

Thank you for the replies and ideas everyone.
I don't want to spend a fortune, just thoughtful bits really.
Yes, he has my mum (his wife), so that's quite a nice idea to get her a little something too.
Thank you again, appreciate the ideas 😊
