7 year old apparently obsessed

DD is in Y2. She gets very interested in completely random things for a while and then move on to something else e.g. dinosaurs, Tudors, butterflies, cyclones (from watching Wizard of Oz).

It tends to be her main topic of conversation. She wants to play games involving her interests and constantly asks questions about it.

Today her teacher told me DD was obsessed with cyclones. He indicated that this was a problem and I should be worried. At night time she told me she was sad as her teacher banned her from talking about cyclones.

Is this normal 7 year old behaviour or should I be worried?

Oh bless her! It sounds totally normal to me as a fellow Mum of a 7 year old. Let her be and politely ignore the teacher ;)

MotherOfTheNoise · 07/06/2019 22:49

@Fatted we have the same thing going on here with Pokemon. If only I hadn't gone through the same phase with my brother when it first came out, I think I may tolerate it slightly better

FunnysInLaJardin · 07/06/2019 22:49

Totally normal. My DS2 has always had obsessions. Titanic for a while, bey blades and now Pokemon, and a million other small ones along the way. He finds out everything he possibly can and then moves on to the next thing.

The head seems rather mean to me.

@MotherOfTheNoise

I'm just winging it as best as I can. I play the pokémon go game on the Nintendo with him and been looking up things online to help him with it.

But fuck me, I am sick to death of sitting there at breakfast hearing him talk about how he's going to mega evolve Charazard!

FunnysInLaJardin · 07/06/2019 22:55

ha ha, lots of Pokemon obsessions. DS2 who is 9 has just spent the whole of his 40 euros holiday money on Pokemon cards and now wants to spend £40 of his saving on a deck which guarantees a certain GX card.

DH is Hmm about it Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 07/06/2019 22:57

Grin Fatted DS2 wants a GX Charisard (SP?) card and will pay handsomely for it!

Singleminded obsession is linked to autism here.

However I would lay money that if your child was obsessing with football, rainbow magic or Pokémon the teacher wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Attache · 07/06/2019 23:09

And if it was Harry Potter it would be positively encouraged as a mature reading choice for Y2.

ilovepixie · 07/06/2019 23:12

I'm 50 and still get obsessions. Currently it's the royal family. Last obsession was North Korea lol.

Pleasebequietnow · 07/06/2019 23:31

Thanks everyone, that’s reassuring. Glad This isn’t unusual and I’m not the only DP who has to suffer this Grin. I don’t have any other reason to think it’s linked to autism, more just genuine intense curiously about the world around her.

I may ask her teacher what his concerns are, but don’t want to be seen as “that” parent.

@Klondike

I'm 46 and I still do, too! Lots of different topics, but my longest running (at least 20 years) is missing people. It's mind boggling.
