bat hole built into house ???

marshymy · 07/06/2019 21:03

I've moved into a new build housing association house and on the outside of the building near the roof there's this hole with a bat symbol on it ???

Is this a hole for bats to come into the loft?? I was told when signing the tenancy that i should not store things in the loft and shouldn't go in there but i thought that would be due to fire hazards?

Oh wow, I would love one of those. I'd also probably set up remote night vision cameras so I could watch the bats coming and going.

dudsville · 07/06/2019 21:14

Wh-whaaaaat? I'm place marking to learn more.

RosaWaiting · 07/06/2019 21:15

if it's a new build I'd be surprised

contact the local Bat Group - yes I know how that sounds! - and ask.

I would love it if it were a Bat Box!!

TheJoxter · 07/06/2019 21:15

Previous tenants were vampires

megletthesecond · 07/06/2019 21:16

Envy ❤.

Invest in a bat monitor (around £80). You'll have lovely summer evenings watching them flit back and forth.

PatriciaHolm · 07/06/2019 21:16

You are moving into the BatCave!

greathat · 07/06/2019 21:16

If there were Bate nesting in the area before the houses were built, they probably had to make provision for them to get planning permission

Soola · 07/06/2019 21:17

That’s fab. I have two bats that flit around my garden like crazy in the spring and summer at dusk.

I don’t know if it’s the same two every year but we call them Bruce and Nora! Grin

Alabasterangel6 · 07/06/2019 21:21

OP it is indeed a bat brick!

My DH works for a brick manufacturing company. That is exactly what that brick is for. DM has just had an extension done and had one put in. You’ll probably have pipistrels nearby they are a pleaaure to watch darting about at dusk and they like to eat the midges!

Thrupennybrit · 07/06/2019 21:21

As greathat says. Planning consent can stipulate that the bats must be accommodated if they were there before the development. My family home had bats in the loft and under the hanging tile cladding. A develpoer bought it and had to spend a year having the bats monitored before he could demolish and build a new house with a bat flat annex.

Pushmepullyou · 07/06/2019 21:22

It’s a bat brick. They’re often built into new builds because they’re generally better sealed and less bat accessible than older houses. It might be that there were buildings or trees with bats in them on the site before your house was built, or it might just have been included as a biodiversity enhancement. More information here:

Don’t worry, you’re not going to get over run Smile. They often allow access into a box behind rather than into the loft

Is no one else a bit shocked by the casual expectation that bats will be in houses? Is this normal in the UK?

slipperywhensparticus · 07/06/2019 21:31

Yes my neighbour's had bats in her loft fortunately she was scared of going in there she was also petrified of bats so I told her they were in mine

I home she isnt on mumsnet

whatswithtodaytoday · 07/06/2019 21:34

How lovely! I'd love a bat brick, if we ever have an extension I'll definitely have one put in. Bats are so cool 🥰

marshymy · 07/06/2019 21:35

wow! Thanks for all the useful info!!

Maybe they should of made it clearer when moving in that there was a bat brick? I'm not fussed about the bats having a little house on my house but i'm sure others would feel a bit freaked out by it!

It's not normal but it should be.

There's room for everyone/thing if we make it.

Soubriquet · 07/06/2019 21:45

That’s fab!!

Someone on my fb is currently fostering a pipistrelle bat. A young male. He is very cute! I am so jealous

ohhdearyme · 07/06/2019 21:50

Our house has bats in the loft. When we brought it we wasn't told about the bat problem Hmm but I've come to love them.
Warm summer nights are great when your sat in the garden watching them come and go.
We've also just had a nest of swallows in the loft which was lovely. Apart from the racket they made

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/06/2019 22:23

It's not normal but it should be

^this

We don’t have bats 😔. But we do have starlings nesting in the roof of our porch. They’ve nested there every year for nearly 30 years and my neighbour keeps telling me I should get the hole blocked up.. ... I keep saying no I WANT them nesting there.... she thinks I’m crazy but I love it....

latedecember1963 · 07/06/2019 22:39

We have bats in our loft. When we had the soffits and fascias replaced we had to make sure a gap was cut out to protect their access/egress point. They are no trouble and as previous posters have said they're fascinating to watch on summer evenings.

LizB62A · 07/06/2019 23:03

You can get bird bricks too - maybe we could put these in new houses too ?

Singlenotsingle · 07/06/2019 23:07

I didn't know bat bricks existed. I want one! Have you got bats in your belfrey as well? Grin

BenWillbondsPants · 07/06/2019 23:08

I would LOVE this! I love bats they're wonderful little creatures. We often sit and watch them in the garden at dusk. There's one massive one in particular that we've called Batty McBatface because we're not very original with names. Grin

BenWillbondsPants · 07/06/2019 23:10

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a bat brick.

I might try to persuade DH that we need an extension just so we can have one!
