Why do so many people say ....

.... that their autocorrect has corrected what they were trying to say to something else? Is it not possible to turn off an autocorrect? Is it possible, but it's so useful otherwise that it would waste more time in the long run to turn it off? From the number of times I see a cross "Damn autocorrect!" on here, it looks to me as though autocorrect is a really massive nuisance. Is autocorrect mainly a smart phone thing?

Autocorrect is, for the most part, a huge time saver. That's why people don't turn it off. 90% of the time it guesses correctly and life is great and you don't even have to complete the whole word you were typing as autocorrect will do it for you.

Now and then however it will guess incorrectly and if you aren't awake enough to notice then you'll send something weird. Usually I find it funny! Yes it's inconvenient, but not enough of an inconvenience to turn it off completely.

Damntheman · 07/06/2019 09:48

You should try using a phone with autocorrect in two or more languages ;) My poor phone is so confused.

dementedpixie · 07/06/2019 09:50

I also use swipe typing on my phone so sometimes get bizarre sentences

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 07/06/2019 09:51

I've recently discovered swipe input, where you swipe across the keypad. I'm doing it now. I'm so wiv da kids.

Although it did suggest "I'm Eric with the kids" so need to be extra careful when swiping.

dementedpixie · 07/06/2019 09:51

It keeps putting in Gerry when I want get

sheshootssheimplores · 07/06/2019 09:53

I’m using auto predict. Most of the time it gets it right and it’s super quick , some of the time it makes me look like a twat 😬

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/06/2019 09:53

That Eric, getting his name out there Grin.

DYAC always good for a snigger.

sheshootssheimplores · 07/06/2019 09:54

And mine decided twat was tear. Which proved my point really.

EleanorOalike · 07/06/2019 09:58

Best one was when I was sharing a recipe, “next put cumin in the soup” “next put cum in the soup” BlushConfused

FleetwoodStorms · 07/06/2019 09:58

I've recently got a Samsung tablet. The autocorrect is so time consuming that I'm going to turn it off as soon as I work out how

No problem on my phone though.

Myusernameismud · 07/06/2019 09:58

Mine changed butler sink to Hitler sink last week. I posted a photo on a fb gardening group I'm part of, but I was in a rush to get to work and didn't notice until I got home later that day. I was mortified.

Babdoc · 07/06/2019 09:58

I wish it had either never been invented, or had a full grasp of context and grammar.
Far too often, it inserts a redundant apostrophe, or accepts the wrong word entirely, simply because the error is spelled correctly - e.g. “defiantly” when the person meant “definitely”. They then never learn from their mistake, thinking it must be ok as autocorrect didn’t change it.
It also annoys me by repeatedly trying to spell “male” with a capital M, in the middle of a sentence. It’s very unlikely that I’m referring to Male, the capital of the Maldives, for goodness’ sake!

Myusernameismud · 07/06/2019 09:59

Oh and it changed maxi dress to nazi dress too. Genuinely think my phone has an agenda.

ceirrno · 07/06/2019 10:11

Most of the time it's a huge time saver, every now and again it does something stupid.

Biggest problem is that some versions it looks fine as you're scan reading it, but then it suddenly changed something as you hit send... Sigh

Pinkvoid · 07/06/2019 10:26

I’m an English teacher but I still use autocorrect because it saves time. I don’t look at the keyboard when I type so occasionally will type the wrong letter and autocorrect, well, corrects it!

babysharkah · 07/06/2019 10:29

I'm guilty of posting and then reading when on my phone so autorrect gets away with daft things. If Mumsnet has an edit function it would solve the problem.

lunabody · 07/06/2019 10:37

I think the mumsnet app has its own autocorrect function which is far more militant than any other app / messaging service - there have been times where I've definitely typed a word correctly, but it subsequently gets changed to something else. I don't have an autocorrect issue anywhere else!

MayFayner · 07/06/2019 10:37

Mine wasn’t on board with my DS’s names for ages, and kept trying to rename them Trojan and Gianni. It has learned to accept their real names now though 😂

Time40 · 07/06/2019 10:39

Ah, OK - so it's useful most of the time. Thanks.

I LOVE the idea of the Nazi phone. I think it's definitely got an agenda!

Now I have to find out what the hell swipe typing is. I've never heard of it.

I felt like you and did turn it off on my phone. I quickly reinstated it as it does work well 90% of the time. It appears I cannot type at all but was blissfully unaware 😆

StayAChild · 07/06/2019 11:02

I like it but make a point of quickly reading before pressing send. Eventually it learns your preferred words, but some unwanted words can be persistent.

Bezalelle · 07/06/2019 11:11

Autocorrect has only ever let me down once, when I wrote to DP that we should "think about the Fuhrer" instead of "future". Yep, we're Jewish Grin
