Life insurance for a single parent - anyone got it?

Seen an advert for it this morning and it got me thinking that perhaps this is something I should have. Have had a look on some comparison sites etc but to be honest I'm completely clueless as to what level of cover I need and for what amount. Can anyone shed any light?

Hi
I’ve got life cover with aviva for about £125k -
I pay £10.30pm -
I figured out what I needed to clear bills/house/etc should I die and a good chunk left over to split between the ds’s.

You normally work out what your mortgage is to clear, plus any debts to clear, plus any extra you want to leave.
I would like to add critical illness but it’s just too expensive.
Comparison sites are good but have a look at aviva/direct line/Tesco too for life insurance

Yes, I do £10.00 a month for £175,000 of cover. Same as pp, enough to clear the mortgage with a fair chunk left over. My is Royal London.

I’ve had one with Legal & General for about 12 years, covered for £405,000. £5k for funeral and £2k each for both kids. I also get it upfront if diagnosed with a terminal illness. It’s £29.68 a month. I keep meaning to see if I could get it cheaper...

Yes, im in Ireland so have life and illness cover which costs 60euro p/m which clears mortgage and leaves a lumpsum for kids.

I pay just under £9 a month with Aviva (was friends provident when I bought it). £100000 cover. Ds will at least have enough to pay the bills for his guardians, and for university.

Yes I think if you can manage 10 a month, do it. Also a will of course.

Bear in mind you might have a death in service benefit at work? That's another 50k for me.

PottyPotterer · 07/06/2019 08:02

Yep, I'm covered for £200k. Probably a little excessive as I don't have a mortgage but it's to cover the cost of raising DS should I die, which would fall to my retired parents, and some for when he's an adult.

I have a sickness benefit insurance - I work for a small company and they wouldn't be able to pay more than stat sickness benefit so in the case of long term illness, financially we would be screwed. That's through British Friendly. I don't have life insurance because the premium was bonkers due to a pre-existing condition.

I'm not single so I apologise if my comment is irrelevant to the discussion. I do have life insurance though, and have done since I was 25. DH and I got it at the same time when we first bought together to ensure that if one of us died then the mortgage would be paid off for the other.

I’m with Legal and general, pay £10 a month and have 400k pay out when I pop my clogs. £100k per child.
