Birds talk to each other, don't they?

We have a bird feeder in the garden and we usually get magpies, wood pigeons, rooks, etc

But today a duck flew in!

How in the world did it know? I put just the smallest bit of bread out and I don't even know how it flew to us (we're surrounded by neighbours).

I suspect these birds have our address saved on their version of bird satnav now.

Don't put bread out for ducks, it is very bad for them!

I have a bluetit which visits my garden and he shouts at us and at the cats because we're sitting in his garden. He's all scruffy at the moment because they're raising their chicks and he's on overdrive.

Don't feed the duck bread because it gives them diarrhoea and upsets their gut. Shredded greens or grain is okay though.

I put a bit of bread out for the garden birds that's why I'm shocked that a duck landed as there's no ponds near us.

They do speak to each other and apparently even have different 'words' for snake and crow!

I'm certain they do. We have free range chickens and I'm sure they communicate with the sparrows

MagicKingdom · 07/06/2019 11:00

Ooh I'm very rural and get lots of variety of birds visit our bird feeders. Never had a duck visit though. Hopefully the local birds will let any local ducks know where to find a good meal! My children would be so pleased to see a duck in our garden!

This has made me well up. Christ. I’m such a sap.

Listen to the pigeons, what they are saying is:
"My toe hurts Betty"
Now I've told you all, you will never get it out of your head when you hear them!!

MadSweeney · 07/06/2019 13:02

we have a pond in the front garden and often get ducks. In mating season it's duck central and they spend most of their time fighting and sitting on the neighbours roof. It's a really strange sight.
No bread for them though, just bloody expensive floating food Blush

They definitely do talk to each other. They communicate with us humans as well with - there's a collared dove in my garden who stares at me through the kitchen window until I bring out food, sometimes he will fly over to me as I'm carrying it through the garden and if I talk to him he tilts his head to listen and fluffs up. I like how the different kinds of birds have different personalities - starlings are squabbly, so are the doves, always seeing each other off if there's food. The sparrows are very polite around food, very "please, after you", no squabbling there at all. Blackbirds are very territorial and keeping their eyes out for rivals. Wood pigeons are extremely suspicious... Grin They are very entertaining.

BarkandCheese · 07/06/2019 13:20

They definitely communicate with one another. If you’re ever sitting outside where a lot of birds are and a cat appears you can hear the change in the noises they’re making when they spot it.

Sewrainbow · 07/06/2019 13:21

Absolutely we currently have a very vocal blackbirds pair that shout warnings when the cat goes outside. When a blue tit fell out the best they were shouting, the blue tits family were sat all around the patio shouting and looking down for him it's like the blackbirds is looking out and warning them all.
