Which makes a better pet? Guinea pugs or rabbits? Also how much is it to vaccinate a rabbit per year? Xx

Should have said guinea pigs! Xx

For who? Both are highly social, need to be kept in pairs and require 5-10 years of care. Rabbits must be neutered and are often less tolerant of handling/prone to injury.

Neither are low-maintenance pets and if you’re on a budget, you should reconsider

For myself and my daughter, was wondering what's the best company to insure a guinea pig with? Xx

Roomarmoset · 06/06/2019 20:23

We've had piggies and they're the best pets ever 😍

Pipandmum · 06/06/2019 20:25

We have two unneutered male rabbits that live outside year round. They don’t like being held but my daughter sits in the run with them and they jump on her and she can stroke them. They’ve never had shots and never been to the vets (they are coming up to 5 years old). Biggest expense is their wooden hutch and run needs replacing every couple years due to weathering. I like them better than guinea pigs as don’t want them inside (though I know people who keep guinea pigs outside too). I’d rather have chickens for the eggs though!

purplecolourcat · 06/06/2019 20:25

Aww brill that's what I wanted to hear, so do you insure your Guinea pigs ? Xx

OP posts:
Decormad38 · 06/06/2019 20:31

I have two rabbits. Please read the rabbit welfare sites. They should not be kept in hutches. They should be vaccinated as these diseases can be fatal to other rabbits if you dont. They should be neutered as they can get cancer if not. To look after them properly its costly plus your child will get bored and you will become the carer! Don’t kid yourself!

So why are you asking about rabbits and their vaccines? Confused
Also why do you only have one guinea pig? - you should have at least 2

purplecolourcat · 06/06/2019 20:50

Because I'm looking at options hence why I asked on here!
I haven't brought either yet, but swaying with guinea pigs- have already decided I'm getting 2 of what ever I decide.

Rabbits need a lot of space and should not be kept in hutches. They need an indoor and / or outdoor pen at least 6ft by 4ft with enough height to stand on hind legs plus a few hours of free roam time too. They are best kept in neutered bonded pairs with 24 hr access to hay. Vet bills can be very high and vaccinations are essential but they are incredibly loving, affectionate pets if cuddled regularly. They need a lot of time.

mamaofboyzz · 06/06/2019 20:51

@Decormad38 sorry to jump on but I recently got two rabbits from pets at home and they told me that they are best living outside in hutches. Can you send me a link as to why they shouldn't be in hutches and what as an alternative please 😊

gotmychocolateimgood · 06/06/2019 20:54

Pets at home want to sell hutches. So they will recommend them. Read this

Aurea · 06/06/2019 20:54

Piggies definitely. (I've had both).

Aurea · 06/06/2019 20:56

Here are my three. Sadly in piggie heaven now.

We have metal pens indoors and outdoors plus a walled garden so for 6 hours a day the bunnies run around freely, play in the bushes etc. There's a playhouse for shelter if it's raining. In the winter they life indoors in their pen.

Floralnomad · 06/06/2019 21:01

Rats , by far the best small pet as they are probably the only ones that genuinely do like human interaction and attention , and I say that as someone who has had rabbits , piggies , rats and hamsters . That said if you do decide to go down the rabbit route go for Belgian hares as they are excellent and in my experience friendlier and more trainable .

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 06/06/2019 21:03

I really don't think guinea pig insurance is a thing. You just pay for any treatment if/when they need it.

I've owned guinea pigs for a good portion of my life and I can count on one hand the amount of times they have had to see a vet. Insurance just wouldn't be worth it IME.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 06/06/2019 21:06

@mamaofboyzz

Most hutches sold in pet shops are far too small for rabbits. When I had rabbits they lived in a huge dog run and kennel rather than a traditional hutch and run.

Veterinari · 06/06/2019 21:10

@purplecolourcat
Weirdly enough i’m Not psychic so was unable to answer with insurance recommendations when you asked about rabbits versus gunnies pigs, and unable to know you planned on keeping multiple Guinea pigs when you asked about insuring A guinea pig. Hmm

Good luck with your quest - i’d Suggest that you’ll get better advice if you ask clearer questions

Roomarmoset · 08/06/2019 14:57

We didn't insure our piggies. We started off with a hutch, then upgraded to a large cage then upgraded to a C&C cage that you build yourself (it's addictive!). It was nice being able to change it around if we needed to and it gave the boys a lot of space. Gizmo, Rhubarb and Heisenberg all loved their home 😍

purplecolourcat · 08/06/2019 15:02

Omg they are lovely!! Where did you get your guinea pigs from? I was thinking of pets at home but was told best not to get them from a shop, a breeder instead? Xx

OP posts:
Roomarmoset · 08/06/2019 15:46

We got our first two from pets at home. Unfortunately Heisenberg was ill from the start and died 6 months later from pneumonia 😢 Gizmo carried on for 6 years though. We rescued Rhubarb from the RSPCA so Gizmo wasn't on his own and they were great together.

The RSPCA tends to have a lot of pairs of guinea pigs so maybe check them out x

purplecolourcat · 08/06/2019 22:55

How old was rhubarb when you got him from rspca ? Xxx

OP posts:
Roomarmoset · 09/06/2019 10:50

He was young, only a Couple of months, his mum had been rescued and they didn't know she was pregnant. The first pic is when we got him, the second pic is how he turned out 😂 xx
