Did they always know that is what they wanted to do? And if not when did they choose that path? Did something happen to encourage them to have that career? What age were they when they made that choice?

Not quite the same but DBro is a paramedic.
He was an average student at school, did Computer Science at uni and worked as s developer for 2 years, then decided he didn't want to be stuck indoors all the time, did some volunteering with St Johns ambulance and then got a career development loan to do paramedic science. He really enjoys it.

Close friend is a junior doctor. He did an MSc in mathematical engineering then decided it was too hard so retrained as a dr!

According to family myth, my DSis announced she wanted a specific medical profession when under 5. She achieved it. I decided I wanted a different specific medical profession at 13, and I achieved it, and am still doing it.

Following with interest, as my dd has recently expressed an interest in medicine at the age of 13, after saying for years that it wasn't something she would want to consider. Apparently, she has found all of the medical topics in school science classes incredibly interesting, so she decided that she should reconsider!
