Best British "picnic snack" for international picnic?!

titsmcgee · 06/06/2019 09:40

Got a work event next week with international/global colleagues. Includes awkward "ice breaker" picnic. We have to take a picnic "snack" that represents our local culture (ie, British). It's got to be something that will survive a long flight (so tragically no scotch eggs or pork pies). What can I take?! Currently thinking Monster Munch, but please help!!

Tea and biscuits or cake?

Mrsjayy · 06/06/2019 09:42

Cheese and crackers but Jacobs obvs no fancy crackers

AnnieOH1 · 06/06/2019 09:43

Scotch egg or pork pie surely?!

Blush so re-read it. Still think mini eggs and mini pies would survive if you packed them with kitchen towel in Tupperware. :)

SlimGin · 06/06/2019 09:44

Scones with jam, cream wouldn't work for travel but maybe you could get those little wrapped portions of butter?

LaMarschallin · 06/06/2019 09:45

Lashings of ginger beer?

AnnaComnena · 06/06/2019 09:46

Scones and strawberry jam? But I can't imagine any fresh food would be particularly appetizing after a long flight.

pikapikachu · 06/06/2019 09:48

I'd go for biscuits- custard creams, bourbons and Jaffa cakes.

Mrsjayy · 06/06/2019 09:48

I think an insulated lunch bag and eggs and pie would travel fine depending which country you are flying to they might not let you take food in.

Thrupennybrit · 06/06/2019 09:49

Pork pies survive long flights , I have done it many times. The suitcase in the hold is usually very cold when you get it. Clotted cream likewise.

GroggyLegs · 06/06/2019 09:49

Freeze pork pies & wrap container in bubble wrap. They're really dense so if fully frozen would last at least an 8h flight. If you've got a fridge to store them at the end?

tardyheart · 06/06/2019 09:50

Bag of Twiglets - I think they are uniquely British if not to everyone's taste.

Davros · 06/06/2019 09:54

Pork pie and Branston but I think the packaging would have to be intact. Lovely flavoured crisps, my faves are Walkers roast chicken

LaMarschallin · 06/06/2019 09:55

It's probably illegal to transport livestock ad hoc, but a jar full of wasps would recreate the traditional British picnic.
Seriously, though, my first thoughts were pork pies/Scotch eggs and the suggestions above about transport seem very sensible.
If you're flying to somewhere with very strict rules about the importation of food, you're not the only one who might have problems deciding what to take.
Even Monster Munch could pose problems; we had to throw away a tube of Pringles at Sydney airport 😥

thaegumathteth · 06/06/2019 09:57

Cucumber and bread and make sandwiches?

thaegumathteth · 06/06/2019 09:58

Although actually wouldn’t be allowed would it?

MissingInActionYouSay · 06/06/2019 09:58

Scones, jam and strawberries are as typically British as you can get. You can buy double cream in the country you are going to surely? Otherwise I would 100% go with frozen pork pies or possibly a medium sized gala pie if it's a very long flight. They freeze and travel really well

AwdBovril · 06/06/2019 09:59

Could you pack scones nested in with something soft so they don't get damaged (clean cloth perhaps), jam in pots, & clotted cream in tubs, packed in with ice bricks in a cool box? How long is the flight?

Avebury · 06/06/2019 10:00

Shortbread

AwdBovril · 06/06/2019 10:01

Or, perhaps cucumber sandwiches? Cream cheese, cucumber, nice white bakery bread? Would that survive in a cool box, if it were wrapped properly?

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 06/06/2019 10:04

Surely the point of a pork pie is its indestructibility? But check the legality if crossing borders, and prepare for your international colleagues to be revolted.

DerelictWreck · 06/06/2019 10:09

What about those chocolate teacakes from M&S?

titsmcgee · 06/06/2019 10:50

I'm flying to the US, so they definitely have some restrictions on what can be taken in. It's an 11hr flight, and picnic is about two days after I get there, so storage of goods at other end might be problematic.

As much as I'd love to put Melton Mowbray on the map, I think a classic scones/jam/clotted cream combo is the way to go. Good point on hold luggage being really cold. Worst case scenario, I can buy some thick cream in America to sub in for the clotted cream if it doesn't survive the trip.

Thanks all for suggestions!

Fruitcake???

Attache · 06/06/2019 11:05

I'd go something that keeps a bit better than scones . Welsh cakes, Jaffa cakes, chocolate digestives, shortbread, Mr Kipling french fancies, battenburg cake.
