Woodlice

Woodlice. I seem to have aan infestation of woodlice of late. I try and be kind and pick them up and put them outside but I'm literally finding 4 or 5 everyday crawling on the floor. Are they likely to be the same ones I'm putting out just coming back again? Do I need to be a more zero tolerance of them and start killing them?

No idea, but my house is like fricking Pet Semetary, the number of woodlouse bodies I have hoovered up lately is grim. No live ones really, they just appear to come here to die Confused

Is this the first year you've had this infestation? I've been in this house for five years and this is the first time it's seemed to have happened.

No, normally get a few, tend to have more ants, though have had fewer this year, waiting to see what flying ant weekend brings.. despatched a centipede to the garden from my kitchen earlier. I'm a bloody wildlife centre.

My place just seems to be a sanctuary for woodlice only Grin the seagulls round here seem to take care of flying any day though.

I get loads from the same window area. Often dead weirdly.

BattenburgIsland · 05/06/2019 23:47

It's the season for them. Weve got them atm. I just ignore them tbh. It's a very old house. I'm used to it! Theres not that many and they just come out at night round the window in the attic bedroom... then they dissapear during the day. They usually go by the autumn completely, but then reappear around may.
They are completely harmless.
If you really hate them you need to find where they are getting in and close up the holes... but that would be an impossible task in my old house.. it's full of holes! So I just leave it! Every now and again we get ladybirds too!
But from what I understand they are no hygiene risk unless they are in your kitchen cupboards etc... and even then it's not too bad. Not like ants or rats etc

They die when they cant get back outside. Theres not really anything for them to eat inside it's just that as it gets hotter and lighter outside they sometimes end up coming in houses for shelter because they like the cold and dark. But if they get stuck inside then they die.

Ladybirds are the opposite as they come in houses in the winter because of the warmth.

Laurajjj · 05/06/2019 23:57

Ah okay. Yeah I like to leave the windows slightly ajar during the day. That's most likely their route but I'm reluctant to change my ways. They just irritate me more than anything. I'll be sitting down and I'll spot one and I'll be rolling my eyes and finding a piece of paper to take them outside. Just getting a bit fed up of it now. As I say, I've never had this problem before this year.

Bio active reptile tanks. Look in to them. You will make a mint off the crawly little buggers Grin

Dd2 is in the process of setting one up for her gecko. They require wood lice. I just bought some last night, I paid $25 for 20 of them. Fckin slaters but given the fancy scientific name.

Oh an if you have magnolias or live oaks, their dried leaves at $40 an ounce !!!!

Laurajjj · 06/06/2019 07:38

$20 for woodlice? Wow. That seems a lot. I'm not sure if I could be doing with any pet reptiles though.
