Can 24 hour old water make you ill!?

I had a glass of water from the tap last night and put it next to my bed. Had a few sips. Just went upstairs now and saw it still there, so I brought it down and put it on the kitchen side. A few minutes later, I went to get my glass of water which I’d just made, and downed it in one, half a pint. It didn’t taste good at all and was warm, and I realised it was the old glass Sad

Is this likely to make me ill???

I have a phobia of being sick. Which is why this may possibly be a bigger deal to me than most people.

Cant help with the phobia but I've drank many a vintage Eau de Tap and never been ill.

ginandnappies · 05/06/2019 22:20

It's fine! I do it all the time Blush

sonlypuppyfat · 05/06/2019 22:21

Surely all water is millions of years old, it just goes round and round again and again. You'll be absolutely fine

ASauvignonADay · 05/06/2019 22:21

I do it all the time. It's fine!

HirplesWithHaggis · 05/06/2019 22:23

My bedside water can be a lot more than 24 hours out the tap by the time I glug it in the small hours. Blush Never been sick from it though.

Rootytoothy · 05/06/2019 22:25

Blimey I’ve drank days old water (probably older if It’s been left in a bottle) and been fine.

TheCaddyisaBaddie · 05/06/2019 22:26

Water in bottles can be stored for a lot longer than 24hrs, you will be absolutely fine

Runbikeswim · 05/06/2019 22:36

I am a water management professional and you'll almost certainly be fine unless the glass was contaminated !!!

WellErrr · 05/06/2019 22:50

Thank you so so much! Why did it taste bad then? Just because it had been out in a warm room?

It'll be fine!! You have acid in your stomach to kill off bacteria. It just tasted weird because it was warm.

WellErrr · 05/06/2019 23:12

Thank you so much I’m feeling a bit better about it now! I know it’s daft.

It tastes funny because it absorbs some carbon dioxide from the air when left sat around - not enough to fizz! But it gives it a bit of a bleh taste.

spanishwife · 05/06/2019 23:35

You know water from the tap hasn't just sprung out of the earth right? It's not fresh either way

You'll be fine OP!

ProfessorofPerspective · 05/06/2019 23:40

We're not on the mains so ours actually has! Out of a spring 100m away, down a stream and into our taps. They charge $39 a bottle for raw spring water in LA - am missing a trick!

EnidButton · 05/06/2019 23:49

No, definitely not. Might've tasted odd because you gulped it down fast and because you're used to it being colder.

Also leaving water out evaporates some of the, (perfectly normal and 100% safe), chlorine that is added to tap water so it might taste a bit different when it's been out a while.

WellErrr · 06/06/2019 07:25

Ok overnight...!

It's fine! I drink days old maybe even a week old water sometimes if it's on my bedside table. Don't worry about it. It tasted bad because it wasn't what you were expecting, not because it was actually bad :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/06/2019 09:09

Sometimes I accidentally drink water out of a glass my cat has drunk from. Ugh. I've not suffered from it though.

spanishwife · 06/06/2019 09:45

Two kinds of water drinkers here:

Magical fairy land @ProfessorofPerspective

and cat water @OhYouBadBadKitten
