Hello

Apologies to everyone for whom this is irrelevant (most of you tbh) but we at Mumsnet are sponsoring this event in the streets around London Fields on Saturday June 8 and wanted to let you know about it if you're in the vicinity. It's basically a massive charity boot sale in aid of a local primary school - see more details (and book your own stall if you'd like one) here.

See you on Broadway Market for a vegan curry

I am in Hackney, afraid I can't get to the boot sale as am recovering from surgery, but hope it goes very well - such a good cause!

DpWm · 05/06/2019 17:36

Thanks for letting me know I live in the vicinity

zeddybrek · 05/06/2019 17:39

Thanks for the reminder! A really fun day out based on last year, now keeping everything crossed for good weather.

Had this been 2002 when I lived on actual Broadway Market, I would have been there like a shot

BarryBarryTaylor · 06/06/2019 18:43

We live close...my daughter has her club in the morning so we may pop by after lunch!

AdoraBell · 06/06/2019 19:08

I grew up In Hackney, London Fields was just few streets away, but am nowhere near now. If I was closer I would help but it isn’t possible, sorry.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 06/06/2019 20:23

Aww, fond memories of London Fields from living there in the early 90s. I'm sure it is artisaned beyond recognition now.

How come Mumsnet are sponsoring this particular school @BojanaMumsnet? Is there an interesting back story?

bedunkalilt · 06/06/2019 20:40

Hi @BojanaMumsnet I have the same question as @bibbitybobbityyhat as to the sponsorship for this event. Not a criticism! Just wondering how the event got sponsored and promoted by Mumsnet, and is this a type of activity that Mumsnet regularly considers? If so, how would a school/community group go about getting in touch?

Crunchymum · 06/06/2019 21:13

Another one interested to know how and why this particular school is being sponsored?

resisterpersister · 07/06/2019 03:27

Yay! We'll be there! It was great last year.

I have no inside info on MN but I know the school and the event so can take an educated guess.

Queensbridge Infants had the genius idea, last year, of holding a community yard sale (they called it the London Fields Jumble Trail). It works like this:

They have a fairly large zone around the school and you have to pay £10 to be included on the map, which gets printed and shown on the web. (You give an idea of what you'll be selling). Anyone who lives in the area can do a sale, you don't need to have DC at the school.

At the end of the day, you donate as much of your profit as you like to the school - could be everything, nothing or any amount you like. (We gave everything except we let the DC keep the little bit of money they made selling toys).

Local businesses can go on the map too but they have to pay more.

The absolutely genius bit of it is the PTA never has to handle the money - it's all done online through a crowdfunder. And, they did really well.

It was good fun last year. Some of the roads near the school had a huge number of houses taking part so there was a great atmosphere. (We're a bit further out).

I understand there was stuff on for the DC in a square near the school too but we didn't make it that far.

I've been trying to persuade my DC's two schools to do this ever since, It's such a genius idea IMO. (We live outside London, but have family there. I was up there last week helping turn out cupboards and find old toys & bric a brac in decent condition to sell. Some of the toys were from the 70s and before!).

How did MN get involved? After the success of last year, I guess perhaps the PTA or teaching staff approached them for sponsorship and MN said yes?

resisterpersister · 07/06/2019 03:34

This is a better link btw, goes straight to the Jumble Trail website.

www.londonfieldsjumbletrail.co.uk/

Although I don't know why the school calls it jumble and MN calls it a car boot? It's not either- it's actually a massive community yard sale!

I imagine MN is supporting it partly also as It's one of a kind as far as I know, and bigger than just a school fair or whatever as the whole community can get involved. I hope the idea catches on other places too.

It's a great excuse for a clear out.

resisterpersister · 07/06/2019 03:38

Or - I wonder in MMHQ have connections with the school - a lot of media types in Hackney these days!

zonkin · 07/06/2019 10:52

Might be worth posting to Islington mumsnetters too - quite a few probably live on the hackney borders!

JimmyJazz · 07/06/2019 11:12

The jumble trail name was coined by a social enterprise who used to run / encourage these events nationally, but I think they folded about 2 years ago.

We have one at the St James Street end of Walthamstow every September, if MN wants to sponsor that...? It’s the area that everyone moved to when they sold their one bed flat in London Fields five years ago :)

resisterpersister · 07/06/2019 11:18

That's a shame they folded JimmyJazz, it's such a good idea. I take it your one in Wathamstow is a big success too if you keep doing it?

(My old 1 bed not too far from London Fields has more than doubled in price since I sold up and left London but I'm not even thinking about that lalalala I can't hear you Wink)

JimmyJazz · 07/06/2019 16:16

Ha, lalalala indeed. Yes, popular for the last five years - it used to be organised using the jumble trail organisation’s website, so residents could just go online to register and be on the official map, but when they folded, a local person just collected registrations by email and created a google map, which was pretty much the same process and ended up looking like this last year: www.instagram.com/p/BnyZqCZB1S4/?igshid=guaoun535553. Then on the day, the organising group (you probably want a group, it would be quite a lot to coordinate the whole thing solo) goes around putting up signs and chalking the pavements to encourage people to explore different roads. It’s fun, you could totally make it happen in your new area - you don’t need permission from the council, just some advertising, the map making and minimal coordination on the day Halo :)

resisterpersister · 08/06/2019 00:47

The name of the map on Google Maps is Jumble Is Massive Grin Grin Grin

Geddit?!

(Very apt! Those were the days! Grin)

resisterpersister · 08/06/2019 08:34

Rain rain go away!!!

Forecast says it'll stop before 11. I really hope it brightens up!

May send the DC out to do a sun dance, that'll help, right?!
