Anybody got a rain cover for mobility scooter?

I'm thinking of getting a cover just to protect the controls, but there are several very different designs.

Has anyone got one a cover, and how do you like it?

This type is all encompassing with little holes for your little hands: www.ebay.co.uk/i/352635499095?ul_noapp=true

Then there's this type, where you don't have to faff getting hands in and out, but I wonder if it might let water in the sides, ie right into the control box: www.ebay.co.uk/p/Mobility-Scooter-Control-Panel-Tiller-Cover-From-Ducksback/1740524924

I never bothered sorry! I got good gloves so my hands didn't get wet.

I'd look on amazon or ebay for second hand, and definitely not from 'mobility aid' shops as they always price things stupidly high!

My dad uses a waterproof coat and a rain/thermal apron plus Sealskinz gloves. The controls don't seem worried by the rain

So have you ever had water problems in the controls, or has it all been fine?

(I use a diddly travel scooter, so not the most robust-looking piece of kit...)

Ooh, cross-post. Thank you both.

It's mostly the controls I'm worried about.

I started by buying a cover for the whole thing but it was so heavy I could barely lift it so gave up and left scooter uncovered. First heavy rain poured into the keyhole and killed the scooter. After a friend fixed it, I then used lightweight sheet plastic but found it needed a weight on the seat and in basket or it blew away.

I finally bought one of these www.amazon.co.uk/Homecraft-Universal-Lightweight-Waterproof-Visibility/dp/B0056PSD6W/ref=sr_1_9?s=gateway&crid=CMLUAEK8LFD7&keywords=mobility+scooter+rain+covers+waterproof&sprefix=mobility+scooter+rain+cover%2Caps%2C150&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1559934608&sr=8-9

I leave it covering the scooter when not in use and use it to keep dry if I need to go out in the rain. It has a hood on it too.

If you only want to cover the controls, there's this: www.amazon.co.uk/Mobility-Scooter-Control-Panel-Tiller/dp/B00CJB3FL4/ref=pd_bxgy_364_img_2/255-6843825-5187836?psc=1&pf_rd_p=07e3e597-b71b-4701-a3fd-d79c50f48406&_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_wg=SMeNN&pf_rd_r=YFRKMHJV4DT2YJKZQHSP&pd_rd_i=B00CJB3FL4&pd_rd_w=MIOID&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&refRID=YFRKMHJV4DT2YJKZQHSP&pd_rd_r=e230f4c1-8957-11e9-a20e-5b8c4defba7f

Ah thank you, I can just see that happening to mine!

I actually do have a poncho (came with) but have to admit I've never opened the packet. Must investigate. Although I suspect I may turn into a very large sail when wearing it!

I've never bothered with one either, mines a travel scooter too and I've been out in some really heavy rain, got to love a British summer!

frasersmummy · 08/06/2019 21:10

My neighbour has one that's like a mini greenhouse.

He uses it all year round. Its really distinctive. We see it outside the pub a lol.. Lol.

We thought it must be hot.. But the only concession he made to the weather was last summer in the heatwave he rolled up a panel..

SargeantAngua · 11/06/2019 07:45

I've come across from the scooter convention thread! My little boot scooter went funny for a few days after I got a lot of rain in the tiller. I now have a little rain cover which works well. Will try and fine a link.....

This, or very similar to it www.aids4mobility.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=3958

PerkingFaintly · 11/06/2019 08:23

Ooh, thank you, that's one of the ones I was looking at!

Do you find it a nuisance getting your hands in and out of the cuffs all the time?

I use my scooter inside shops, rather than parking outside, so I'm imagining it being a faff every time I reach for beans then move the scooter on. Or alternatively a faff getting a wet cover off and on outside the shops.

Lots of different rain experiences on here, clearly!

I’m a life long wheelchair user and have used a powerchair for about 15 years. So slightly different but I wanted to post a word of warning.

I’d go out in the rain and not cover my control. Then last year I got caught in a horrible downpour and it blew the fuse on the joystick and I had to replace it. I limped home, had to reset my chair multiple times on the way, heart in mouth stuff, barely made it before it died completely.

So now I cover it. I use a plastic food bag which the tech suggested was just as good as a proper cover. But probably not suitable for a scooter.

SargeantAngua · 11/06/2019 12:28

I scoot in shops too. The cuffs are pretty loose (I've no hand dexterity issues so might be different if you have), but mainly the whole thing flips off quite easily, give it a shake and stuff it in the basket. The only time I have trouble when it's on is opening and getting through the heavy front door to my block of flats - you can't get hands in and out really fast for swapping forward/back and pulling a door. But, as I said, the whole thing comes off easily enough.

PerkingFaintly · 11/06/2019 12:42

Hmm...

I'd actually hit "Buy" on the other design last night, but I could cancel and get this one.

TheHatOfDoom Shock That must have made your blood run cold! At least mine can fit into the boot of any taxi in an emergency, but a big powerchair conking out on the roadside... noooooo!
