Anyone read 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark'. Golden State Killer book?

I finished it last week on holiday and now I'm obsessed. I'm on websluths, watching documentaries. It's particularly fascinating because we now know who he is.

The book was excellent and it's such a shame that the author didn't live to see him caught.

Ooh you've just reminded me I got most of the way through this on holiday last year but never finished it. I must go back to it!

No, but just listened to a podcast on Amazon audio about it all ... they talked about the author of this book

I'm halfway through it, stopped to listen to the my favourite murder audio book :)

The lead detective on the Golden State Killer case has a new podcast called Murder Squad.

It was nice to read it knowing that he's been found. How they missed an ex cop who was arrested for shoplifting dog repellent and a hammer I don't know. He fit the profile exactly.

Oh my - I have just read this book - it was scary but fascinating. So pleased he was caught - phew! What book did you go onto next?

MargieMo · 28/07/2020 19:11

This is not my usual type of reading/viewing at all, because it is unfortunately too close to home. However, a few years back I attended a talk on sexual violence and an author Winnie Li spoke about her experience and book called Dark Chapter (so @DustyJigsaw you might find that book interesting).

In the Q&A afterwards I heard the about GSK, I'd never heard about that. I took note of the book and read it. I have not seen the HBO doc, but from reading reviews it seems very good, and gives more background on the author, her life, etc. So I'll certainly watch that.

DNA sample collection should help resolve a lot crimes going forward. And resolve older stranger rape cases too. That is a very good thing.

Yes read it last year, been a regular on the Reddit earons sub as well as websluthes, the author and others contributed quite a lot to the Reddit sub.

Following this thread I've just watched a few of the episodes of the new HBO. I'm very impressed. It gave a great insight to the author's life, work, family, friends, etc. A very interesting and tragic story from the author. Her husband and child must be so proud of her.

Also, it was fascinating in episode 5 to see how the DNA tracing was done. That was just not possible a few years ago.

I’ve not read the book but there was a six part series on Sky Crime a couple of months ago which was excellent. I’m in the UK, but it was a HBO series. Absolutely fascinating (though awful for the poor victims)

LucilleBluth · 29/07/2020 10:37

Ahhh, this is my old thread and yes, I’ve been watching the HBO series about Michelle.

It’s such a fascinating case, I can’t wait until all the details come out. Why did he stop in 1986? We know he kept souvenirs, did they find them when they raided his house?

A good podcast is The Murder Squad, Jenson and Holes, both worked with Michelle and Paul Holes worked on the case.

You might want to give the Paradise podcast a go.

It's very, very dark, but there are some interesting links to the Golden State killer

OhYeahYouSuck · 29/07/2020 12:17

I watched the series on this last year but didn't know there was a book. I'll give that a read!

MargieMo · 29/07/2020 12:57

This is fairly dark topic for sure! I ended reading the GSK book, as a recommendation from discussion at even discussing sexual violence. I've never had an interest in true crime, in fact it would have NEVER occurred to me to watch or read in that area.

Just curious, how did you other posters get interested in the topic?
