Help me vipers - I need to order some very particular flowers for a funeral.

A friend's (let's call her A) father has sadly passed away. The mutual friend who's closest to her (let's call her B) said that she'd prefer for us not to bombard her with texts/calls, but upon enquiry says that flowers/charity donations for the funeral would be well received and appreciated.

Now, A has in the past spoken warmly about her dad's allotment and how he loved growing things and was always sending her back to her home with armloads of veg. I have an allotment too, so enjoyed discussing the various advantages of Hinnonamaki gooseberries and the like with her :)

Once it comes time to send flowers, I'd love to be able to send something with a more fruit/veg slant; maybe something with ornamental cabbages or similar. I've had a peruse and nothing is leaping at me, but it sounds like the kind of thing that someone, somewhere will be willing to make up and deliver (sadly we're too far away to attend the funeral in person).

I'm sure someone here will be able to help me out with a link :) thanks!

Seems like a waste of food though.

It looks like a few places would do them, maybe get in touch with a florist local to them and see if they can sort one for you if you send them photos over?

I immediately thought of this one - it was very striking at the time!

It is wasteful I suppose, but many people prob throw away more than this on a fairly regular basis Confused

Is the idea to give a wreath that will stay by the grave until it is thrown away or something your friend can grow in memory of her Dad?

Soola · 04/06/2019 21:19

I would phone around a few local florists in the area the funeral is and ask if they can do a garden spade arrangement or similar.

I must admit I hadn't thought they did wreaths with actual veg! I just wanted something with ornamental cabbages in it maybe Confused

Having said that, after my mum's funeral we did bring the flowers home - I've still got some of them in a box 5 years on. If my friend and her mum received a relatively small veg wreath I suppose they could bring it back home with them - saves a shopping trip. They're frugal sorts and would appreciate that sort of thing.....

Don't forget Rosemary for Remembrance.

GiantKitten · 04/06/2019 21:23

Friends dad would probably appreciate the idea of them eating his wreath Smile

I did spot one made with herbs on one of the links - that might be a nice middle ground....

Those veg wreaths are fab. So thoughtful for an allotment gardener.

Hi! Florist here. Most florists would be able to put together a sympathy arrangement ( wreath/ spray/ post etc) with a garden type feel- e.g. very vegetative. Ornamental cabbages are more a winter thing and aren’t around much atm. You may be able to get: alliums (big chive flowers) sprays of chilli peppers, flowering mint, rosemary, various berries such as hypericum (St. John’s wort), eryngium ( thistle), fountain grasses, poppies and poppy seed heads, other English county gardens type flowers and foliages like stocks, sweet peas, alchamila mollis, safflower, golden rod, daisy chrysanthemums, possibly blossom as well. HTH!
