Does anyone work for Ryanair? I have a luggage question.

Booked a holiday through teletext, ( which I really wouldn't recommend )
Ended up with priority tickets which allows 2 hand luggage, and 10kg each. So it transpires, if I'm correct, that the 10kg is also hand luggage, and not checked in luggage, meaning I actually don't have an allowance? So I'd have to pay 80 odd quid to add just one 20kg case? Im so confused, tried calling ryanair, but was on hold, only for them to hang up on me after waiting 15 minutes

Yes, you would need to add hold luggage

MuddyElephant · 04/06/2019 19:02

www.mybaggage.com/shipping/airlines/ryanair-baggage-allowance/ details here. You get 2 x cabin bags as a priority customer - one small e.g handbag and one suitcase. Beware of the size limits as they can b v strict

lljkk · 04/06/2019 19:19

It is confusing. I got confused, too. How it worked for me 4 weeks ago:

The 10 kg backs ARE checked in when you check in. There is dated info online that says take the bags to gate where the 10kg bags will be taken off you & put in hold; but it turns out they go in with regular checkin and there were notices at airport saying we'd be fined if we took them to gate.

Plus can take a regular small backpack you can fit under seat in front of you, is free.

Check the dimensions of the 10kg limit bags, not that big at all.

‘Priority’ seats let you take the cabin case and a handbag onboard. They don’t make you check it in, but give you the option to if you want to. We travelled from Stansted to Portugal back in March and don’t think things have changed.

Loopylou6 · 04/06/2019 20:11

Thanks, I guess I'll try and call them tomoz again. It looks like they want 80 quid for a 20kg checked in case Hmm

Their online chat is better than trying to phone them. They’ve been very helpful when I’ve used them

BlueCornishPixie · 04/06/2019 20:22

I just had a bit of an issue with Ryan air baggage and did online chat and was resolved in about 10 minutes.

But yeah you will have to pay to take hold luggage, the 10kg is a hand luggage size suitcase. They will put that in the hold for you and you won't have to pay but it's hand luggage size bag.

It's quite normal policy for a budget airline to make you pay for hold luggage. It's not really Hmm face worthy, that's why it's so cheap

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/06/2019 20:45

How long are you going for and what sort of holiday? Unless you need loads of extras (sporting equipment, baby things other than pushchair etc) then you should be able to manage with the allowance you have with a little care packing and buying your toiletries in Boots at the airport.

£80 sounds an awful lot - I paid £50 for a case between DP and I with them a few weeks ago and the main reason I wanted that was to take scuba diving gear.

But if you dress carefully on the flight and pack carefully and your holiday is a week in the sun, you might be able to avoid a hold case.

Starisnotanumber · 04/06/2019 23:44

Not quite what you asked for but remember to check in 48 hours before leaving on each flight. It's easier on the app Ryanair never sit you together either if it matters to you check in asap after the 48 hour window. The app then allows you to change seat usually there's one free next to a checked in one.
About the luggage you have with priority boarding a 10kg case and a tiny bag each to be taken into cabin, this means that any liquid including makeup lip balms etc must fit in the small plastic bag at the airport but you can go to boots airside and get stuff such as mouth wash and deodorant you can't fit in your bags you can take one bag of airport purchases, make sure you get a carrier bag when you pick up stuff do they can see it's airport purchases
If you want to eat and drink on plane it's also cheaper to buy at airport after security such as a boots meal deal or similar Ryanair prices are expensive.

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/06/2019 04:28

Or of course there is also the option of paying even more to Ryanair to choose your seats and then you can check in much earlier than 48 hours, but check you haven't already got this.

I didn't know you can change seats in the app, that's good to know as I only ever travel alone, with DP or with other adults we never pay and take which seats we are given for free. last time we had window seats 2 rows apart one way and a similar arrangement of aisle seats on the way back so pretty good as not middle seats crammed in between strangers.

I much prefer paper boarding passes so not pissing about with phones but we had to do this on the way back on our last trip as we couldn't access a printer and it was a bit of a learning experience as they now make you download a boarding pass into Google pay, which we don't use, or presumably Apple pay if you have an iPhone.

Last time we travelled with them we just had passes as pdfs, so obviously this is another thing that you must get right or else they make you pay even more.

Can't complain when we get return flights to Spain for less than £50, but it does feel a little like a test in how well you can follow instructions.

Finally, don't get carried away shopping in boots at the airport as you can't bring anything back with you remember.

Starisnotanumber · 05/06/2019 07:34

Just to clear up a point in my post. If you book in via the app then you can change seats but there is a charge of whatever the seat would cost if you chose it originally. If they allocate you a seat costing 10.00 and a seat costing 4.00 you can move a single seat to sit together costing either 10.00 or 4.00 or stay where you are put.
I prefer paper copies of passes as well but the app is a useful back up and passes can be stored on more than 1 device if they have both got the app so allows for lost phones or battery running out.

ShakespearesSisters · 05/06/2019 07:46

Priority means you can take a 10kg bag in the cabin, there are only 100 priority spaces for cabin luggage but 198 seats if I remember correctly.( If you didn't have priority it would cost you an extra £10 to put that bag in the hold)
You can also take a 'handbag/small rucksack" that must fit under the seat infront of you.
I'd try and pack savvy and fit it all in the cabin allowance, my mum and dad have fone a 10 day holiday on hand luggage only and just buy shower gel, shampoo etc when they get there. They are very good at a capsule wardrobe.
A 20kg case is expensive but then the overall ticket price is probably cheaper than an airline that gives you a 20kg case included *that you might not need)
The rules had changed again in November 2018. No luggage is free anymore other than the small handbag. You either pay priority and its included or you pay to put it in the hold whether 10kg or 20kg. Car seats are still free though.

eurochick · 05/06/2019 07:56

Lijkk's post is not correct if you have priority. You take your 10k bag into the cabin.

lljkk · 05/06/2019 19:35

Ah, I stand corrected. I did not know this word Priority had special meaning.

Starisnotanumber · 05/06/2019 20:18

Dictionary definition of priority is being treated as more important than others.Ryanair definition is paid more for your seat so you can get luggage on board.

lljkk · 05/06/2019 20:21

Priority seems to mean special luggage rules for RyanAir. Doesn't say that under priority in the dictionary.

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/06/2019 21:47

Priority with Ryanair means that you get to board the aircraft first and put your large case in the overhead locker. Then they let the non-priority small bag people on, who put their small bag under the seat, or in the locker if they are lucky to find space.

The limited number of priority places is designed to make sure that everyone with a case can get it on the plane without delay providing that people load them efficiently which never happens because many are idiots.

Yambabe · 05/06/2019 22:55

Agree with the PP who said use Ryanair's online chat rather than phoning or emailing, I have found them very useful.

Ryanair's luggage policy is quite easy if you break it down, it just seems complicated when you first look at it.

If you pay for a Ryanair seat you get to take a small bag on board with you. Although they do give max dimensions for this bag I have found them to be fairly flexible about it. As long as it's squashy and fits under the seat in front they are usually OK with it.

Once you've got your basic seat and small bag you have 3 further options.

  1. you pay £8-12 for a small checked bag which is cabin-bag-sized and must weigh under 10kg. You check this in at the desk when you arrive at the airport, and only your small bag goes through security and onto the plane with you.

  2. for a similar price you can get priority boarding. This is limited to 100 places per flight, and means you get to take a 10kg cabin bag onto the aircraft with you and put it in the overhead locker. With this option you bypass the checkin desk and your bag goes through airport security with you.

  3. You pay more (£25-40) to take a 20kg checked bag with you. If you do this, the pricing structure means that sometimes your bag costs more than your seat.

Note that you can combine priority boarding with a 20kg bag, but you can't combine a 10kg checkin bag with a 20kg one. You also can't combine priority boarding with a 10kg bag and effectively take 2 10kg bags with you.

All the luggage options are cheaper if you do them when you book rather than add them on afterwards. If you're comparing Ryanair prices with other airlines on a particular route you need to factor this in when deciding if they offer you best value or not.

Hope that helps.

Loopylou6 · 10/06/2019 01:57

Thank you everyone, we've just arrived, and we did as someone here suggested and packed clever, so just took two cabin bags, we're only here for 4 days, so was pretty easy :)
