Would you / do you make tradespeople take their shoes off when they come into your house?

I know the great shoes off debate is done many a time on here and I'm firmly in the SHOES OFF camp.

What do you do though when it's a tradesperson - eg decorator/electrician/plumber/gas man/delivery person and they need their boots on to protect their feet. Do you make them wear shoe covers or do you happily let them walk round your house?

I'd just let them, shoe covers aren't great, they rip, get caught on things, I wouldn't want to wear them if using a ladder. Some roll out a dustsheet from the outside door.

I was gobsmacked recently when a large heavy item was delivered requiring a two man lift and the delivery men paused at the threshold with the huge box held up while they slipped off their shoes. They then proceeded to manhandle the box upstairs barefoot.

I was pleased they didn't dirty the carpets but wouldn't have dreamed of asking them to remove their shoes.

I work with risk assessments and actually thought that they were making the task more risky both in terms of the risk of dropping the item on their unprotected feet, risk of slipping, risk of tripping and the difficulty of taking their shoes off whilst holding something large and heavy.

The last few workmen we have had have taken their shoes off but I never ask anyone to remove their shoes.

In Japan even firemen remove their shoes entering a house to deal with a blaze sometimes😂
