Curry goat anyone?

I have promised to make this for 20 people for a family gathering on Sunday and could do with some advice as never attempted it before!

Shall I buy meat on or off the bone and which cut is best leg or shoulder?
How do you make it come out tender?
Any idea how much goat to order please?

If anyone has any tips or a foolproof recipe I would be very grateful, thanks

Oh I love curry goat, it tastes a lot like lamb. It is very overpowering tho.......I buy my spices on Amazon (( lazy )) and opt for milder chillies although I've also had the good stuff.

It is extremely rich tho, a small bowl full with rice and salad is.enough to fill me up. And I'm a greedy sod.

OP, I know one slow cooker wouldn't be practical for twenty but could you borrow a couple more?
Or, failing that, would it be more practical to do two or three casseroles in the oven?

It's going to be lovely.

It's gorgeous, the best recipe I've found includes letting the ingredients marinate overnight.

You could cook it in two batches in your slow cooker...curry often tastes better a day or two on.

Next door neighbour's version.

Marinade in lemon juice and spices - it has to be on the bone, use a cleaver to make smaller pieces - overnight.

Cook chopped onion and more spices in oil, chuck in the goat, add tomatoes, large sprigs of thyme and about three Scotch Bonnets, slit rather than chopped and leave to cook. Chuck in spring onion towards the end, take the sprigs and peppers out.

Be careful about the bones though, chunks of bone are fine, easy to remove but little splintery bits are horrible.

Mix everything up the night before to marinate it. I love goat, we ate a lot when I was growing up.

Sundaychiller. You will need around 10-12 pounds of meat for 20 people. I prefer mutton shoulder (bones in from any Halal butcher). I usually season the meat with thyme, pepper, garlic, all purpose seasoning, crushed pimento and curry powder. Leave it overnight. Cook the meat in oil until it is browned and then add water. Cook until tender on a low heat for around 2 hours (ensuring you stir the meat every 20 minutes or so).

Next add sweet pepper, chopped onion, 1-2 tomatoes, fresh thyme, chopped spring onion, scotch bonnet and garlic cloves. Stir and bring to the boil. Add baby potatoes and more water. Cook for a further 40 mins.

I used this recipe but, as far as I can see, if you get the proportions right, scaling up to 20 or more would work.
Don't worry if they sink since they still seem quite light.
Hoping everything goes well (I may be back here having volunteered to organise a barbecue for varying numbers of chess players..!?).

Sorry kazzer I didn't mean them to be insulting.

I'd say the same about Stilton. It's sour milk turned solid left to grow mouldy and stinky. I might love it because I grew up with it, but I wouldn't serve it as a main dish at a big party for people unless I was sure they liked it too.OP hadn't cooked goat before so I wondered if she was just being experimental.

Curried goat completely turns my stomach. If I'd grown up with it, I'd probably love it. It's an acquired taste.

I haven't cooked it, only eaten it in East Africa in tiny cafes and once had a home cooked version at a friend's wedding in London, so probably not the best or enough examples and I shouldn't judge it from that. I stand corrected. You are all making me want to try it.

Mmmm! I love curried goat and also roast suckling kid.
I have no heritage linking me to either dish, they are just delicious.
Intrigued with just slitting the scotch bonnets, thinking about it I think I’ve eaten dishes where this is how they’ve prepared them. Going to try it myself. It makes sense given the lunch they pack.
