Confused about travel insurance

My OH recently cancelled his bank account which provided travel insurance.

I now need to sort out travel insurance for our holiday to the Dominican Republic at the end of the month.

It seems really high in price. The cost of the holiday was £4,000 and to insurance the holiday for cancellation due to ill health/death etc and medical cover over there it’s costing £140 for this single trip.

Does this seem right?

Its the medical insurance element - Insurers vary, but most bracket the Caribbean with the US for that, which always pushes it way up. We always used to have annual Worldwide including US , but knew last year that we weren’t going to need US mainland. We found that M& S didn’t classify Costa Rica as US , so used them. Actually had to claim for cancellation, first time ever, and they accepted but were glacially slow in paying.

If you don't have any special requirements like health conditions or extreme sporting activities, why don't one of you take out another bank account of this type, especially if you have more than one holiday a year as there are several that cost not much more than £140 a year and include breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance too.

If you use the benefits, they can be a fantastic bargain as you have discovered. Why did your OH cancel the account just before your trip?

Considering I've just taken out a year long policy to include USA/Caribbean for £67, yes its high. Unless you have some serious existing medical conditions or are elderly, in which case will get higher premiums.

Depends what medical conditions you've declared and how high risk they consider you to be.

With lower cost cover you're unlikely to get cancellation cover for the full £4,000. You need to weigh up the risk of needing to cancel against the cost of additional cover.

Seems about right, but try asda, I managed to get worldwide with sports for £100 last year

I'm always suspicious about the lower cost cover and achievable prices.

Even without cover for DPs various 'unhealthy middle aged man' illnesses (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high chlolesterol) and our need to cover deeper than standard scuba diving and downhill mountain biking, we can't get anywhere near the 'from' prices on comparison sites or those quoted by Moneysavingexpert.

We usually pay around £30 for a week or about £90 for a 40 something couple in Europe. I've looked at the bank accounts, but when we add on everything we need, I can see it costing more than what we pay for decent travel insurance and breakdown cover, but if you can stay within the policy limits offered by bank accounts and go worldwide, cover for about £150 per year looks quite good value.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/06/2019 14:07

That's £90 for annual cover btw.

Buy an annual policy for your family. Just read it carefully.
