Can I get a small Alexa for turning on my kitchen light?

Ordered an American fridge freezer and the only place it can go covers the light switch.

If I got a small Alexa can I keep her plugged in the kitchen soley for that? Do I need to buy a special bulb?
Does it have to be the big alwxa?
Sorry but am technologically defunct.

Yes you can get the echo dot (the smallest) and a special light bulb that links

If you don’t want to use the rest of Alexa features you can just get a smart bulb that links to an app on your phone

Bebe does that mean only my phone can control it? So my kids wouldn't be able to switch it on without my phone?

But Alexa anyone could use?

Could someone link to what I actually need to buy to make this work please?

You need a wifi bulb and a smart speaker (Google mini or an Echo dot would do as they are the smallest and cheapest).

Amazon sell lots of wifi bulbs (Phillips Hue are the best but really only if you want bells and whistles).
Just search for a bulb that fits your kitchen light thats works with Alexa/Google.

You'll then be able to voice control it.

BillGiggeloe · 04/06/2019 09:54

Oh, you can also get remote controlled bulbs that you don't need a smart speaker for from Amazon that come with their own remote control.

I really wouldn't rely on alexa to operate the kitchen light with no other options. We have a load of smart plugs/bulbs and just occasionally there will be some sort of system failure and they don't work for a couple of hours. Also if your Internet isn't working then you won't be able to operate the light.

Get the lightswitch moved. By the time you've finished faffing about you'll have spent as much as it will cost to move the switch!

HeartContainer · 04/06/2019 10:02

Really in the case of a failure we can move the freezer forwards for a few hours and use the switch x

A dot is 30 and a bulb is 15.

Ive been quoted 130 for the light to be moved. I don't have that.

We have lots of them (Hue bulbs and various Alexas)

I've never had a couple of hours outage, sometimes you ask Alexa to switch the light off and she says ok but fails to do it. You ask again and she does it perfectly which I can cope with.

I think it's a really good idea actually, but I'm a massive twat for stuff like that

Omzlas · 04/06/2019 10:13

Alexa sucks IMO and Google is far better (I've got both and don't work for Google!)

BillGiggeloe · 04/06/2019 10:21

I've never had an outages on my Hue bulbs or Wifi bulbs either.

Phillips Hue actually do a starter pack with a bulb and a Hue dimmer switch that can be fitted to the wall wherever you want it or just used as a remote.

You can sometimes pick them up really cheaply on Amazon Marketplace.

You need a Hue smart bridge (£45 or sometimes sold in packs with free bulbs) as well as the bulb - it's built into some of the larger Echos but not into the dot as far as I know.

Ikeas smart bulbs are good. They come with a controller that has a magnetic holder that can be easily attached to a wall or other surface (even the side of the fridge freezer). I'd advise the bulb and controller that is £29. But the more basic one is £15.

Why not try a WiFi switch? We have one that controls our kitchen, sitting room and back door lights. Our Google hub controls it, or the app, and it's also touch sensitive so if the WiFi is switched off for any reason, you can still press the pad. OH installed it himself.

That's ours in the picture(if it loads!), red light shows the kitchen light is on, blue is off.
