Neighbour cutting tree down in nesting season

Is this even legal? There's a very mature deciduous tree at the bottom of their garden which they've been hacking down (very amateurishly) over the last couple of weeks. I am sure there must be bats roosting in there as there are usually loads swooping around the back garden at dusk.

The people living there are a bloody nightmare. Another neighbour complained when they let the branches fall all over his hedge and garden: they told him to fuck off, so I definitely don't want to go round and politely ask them why they're chopping down a huge tree in full leaf when there is likely to be wildlife nesting in there. They won't give a toss about that.

Is it against the law to destroy a tree if wildlife is living in it, and if so, is there somewhere I can report it? I'm in England.

your local council first thing in the morning.

LizB62A · 03/06/2019 22:34

According to this (which I think is legit), yet it is an offence:

You can’t just willy nilly cut down trees. Ring the local authority.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 03/06/2019 22:39

When is the nesting season over? Always wonder, wrt hedge cutting timing

Dogseggs · 03/06/2019 22:51

Ok, I will give the council a ring for advice tomorrow.

Nesting season is around March - August I think.

You can't just cut down trees when you fancy it anyway I don't think. Seriously, ring the council in the morning stupid dickheads Angry

ArcheryAnnie · 03/06/2019 23:04

With a bit of luck they will be stopped before they kill the tree altogether, and will get an enormous fine.

redcaryellowcar · 03/06/2019 23:07

Your local authority probably have a map of trees with tree preservation orders on them, you can probably find this online, I agree with pp call council in the morning.

Chloemol · 03/06/2019 23:11

Nesting is 1st March to 31st August. You can cut hedges, trees if they are dangerous, but not otherwise and can incur large fines. You need to report of to the planning enforcement team at your council

Last year my neighbours cut down the ivy that was between our houses while I was out for the day. Came home and couldn't believe my eyes. Eggs and dead baby chicks all over my front garden, I went ballistic! Their reason for doing it was was because they couldn't stand the tweeting 😳 I was absolutely disgusted and had to get dh to pick them all up off the lawn because the neighbours refused to do it and I was in tears 😡 I called the council but when they asked what birds they were they wasn't interested. So the neighbours got off With it.

lucymegan · 03/06/2019 23:13

Was heartbreaking to see the mum and dad bird frantically looking for the nest for days after 😭

Merryweather007 · 03/06/2019 23:15

Oh my god lucymegan that’s awful!

Omg that's horrific, I think I'd have to burn their house down with the fuckers still in it 🤬

StormcloakNord · 03/06/2019 23:45

Hopefully the tree has a TPO on it and they get fined the arseholes!!

lucymegan · 04/06/2019 00:08

@Merryweather007 @FoxSquadKitten it was absolutely horrific. I've never in my life seen something so cruel 😭 the neighbour had asked me a few weeks before if I minded them trimming it away from their bedroom window because it was making its way in. I said "yes that's fine but only a trim because there's nests in there" ok she said. Then came home to all the ivy gone with parts of nests all over the place, when I got closer I saw the eggs and chicks 😭 I still can't look at the neighbours today they make me sick.

Dogseggs · 04/06/2019 18:06

Lucymegan my god, that's awful. What ignorant callous idiots.
I didn't get the chance to call the council today but will do tomorrow.
