Has anyone successfully gone low sugar/low carb?

Went to the Dr's today to discuss why, despite losing over 5 stone in weight, hardly anything has changed on my bottom half.
He explained that we all basically have too much sugar in our diet, especially from carbs. The only way to reduce this type of weight is to go low carb/low sugar. I should be aiming for 25g each day, but a banana for instance is 15g, so it's not a huge amount!
Has anyone successfully done this? I was all for it this morning, but it's all a bit daunting now.

25g of carbs is v low afaik. Take a look at keto plans if you are interested in this as I think this around this level (for complete disclosure an really really no expert or recommending anything).

I personally struggle with low carb. I lose weight but I cannot sustain, get v light headed and bored. It definitely has some pluses (less pmt, fewer food cravings) but isn't for me.

It's a huge minefield so really do your reading. GPs aren't generally nutritionists

Sorry for the confusion! I meant 25g of sugar per day. However, he was saying there's loads of sugar in carbs, so I'd need to cut down in both areas.

There's a topic entirely dedicated to LCHF over in weight loss. Loads of tips and ideas. They run an online bootcamp too.

I'd say I follow a lower carb way of eating. So I still eat pulses, potatoes, squash etc. Not much in the way of pasta or bread or rice.

I have it say it really works for me : I think it helps if you like veg though and like cooking.

I have eggs and yogurt for breakfast, soup and salad for lunch then maybe meat and two veg for dinner. Or a curry, casserole, steak and salad for dinner.

Thanks managed, I'll have a look

Come over to the fast 800 , blood sugar diet thread.
I’ve benn doing it for 4 weeks tomorrow and I’ve lost just over a stone from all the right places.
It’s low carb, high protein , medium fat. Devised by Dr Michael Mosley .

It works for me, I lost weight and reversed my diabetes. I cut out obvious sugar completely - cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc. I no longer have cereals or toast for breakfast, instead I have yoghurt or an egg in some form.

For lunch or dinner, it's easier to be low carb if you stick to basics - meat or fish with a big pile of veg instead of potatoes or pasta. I make lasagne with butternut squash slices and spag bol with courgette noodles. Work lunches are more tricky because obviously sandwiches are very carby, so I tend to have salads or soup.

If I have an urge for chocolate I have a bit of Lindt 90% dark choc.

It was hard to begin with but it really is true that over time your taste buds change and eventually things like cakes & biscuits taste soooo sweet you don't want any more than a bite anyway.

And I would second following MM's diet plan - I started by reading his book.

Aunty5ocial · 03/06/2019 20:54

Ive been following keto diet, which includes less than 20g carb per day. It’s difficult to switch at first but once you body adapts to using fat as energy rather than carbs it becomes much easier. There’s tons of info on the net about it.

prettybird · 03/06/2019 21:01

You could also look at the MN Boot Camp topic, which is High Fat Low Carb - but as long as you follow The Rules, you don't need to count anything Smile

Sorry, can't link as I'm on the App, but we are currently in Week 4 of the 10 week Boot Camp - but people jump in all the time (they just need to do the 1st 2 strict weeks before going on - if they want to - Boot Camp Light)

I lost about 2 stone on my low carb diet during my pregnancy last year. It is definitely worth a go.

Sleepinglemon · 03/06/2019 21:28

I've been keto, eating fewer than 20g of carbs a day for 2 years. Lost 4 stone and well within healthy weight. It's actually easier to go super low carb than just to cut some out. As all cravings for carbs go. I find if I still eat some it's slippery slope territory. I don't limit how much fat I eat though, and it was quite a lot at the start until I became fat adapted. So never felt light headed or hungry.

Grimbles · 03/06/2019 21:38

I lost 4 stone over a year low carbing.

It's a good way of eating for me because I enjoy eating the 'allowed' foods enough so I dont miss carbs and so am not feeling deprived.

I recommend the bootcamp that runs on here a few times a year.

Have done low carb (but definitely not low sugar :( )
