38 and have started getting white hairs and have dealt with this by plucking them out. They are almost shiny white and quite fine, unlike my dsis who has grey course ones. But they are getting more and more. I have naturally black hair that has been very low maintenance. So what are my options. If i leave then will it be like the salt and pepper hair and usually how long does it take to get that. Once you start getting grey/white hairs does it take long before all your hair is white/grey, id quite like that, having black hair is fairly restricting. Or is the alternative having to dye my hair all the time? How often do people dye their hair to cover grey?

Well if you’re getting a lot of them now, I wouldn’t be plucking them out. You don’t want to cause a hair loss problem. Have you considered the touch up hair dye you can get now where you can just put it on isolated areas? If your hair tends to fall into a parting then you could just deal with the obvious hairs. Then when eventually you feel there’s lots of white, you can visit the hairdresser to get your hair dyed, or use a packet dye or perhaps reconsider your hair colour altogether and start to go lighter.

Nature's highlights!
You sound quite pleased to have them - why not just let it happen? Why should women feel compelled to dye their hair from the first grey/white to eternity? So much effort, time, stress about roots, and cost!
I'm leaving mine to do its own thing.

I'm 48 and have let my natural colour come through. Dark brown naturally, started to colour my hair in my late 20's, like you a few and I used to pluck them out.
The hair growing through is white it just appears grey against the natural dark hair.

You will spend many years colouring if you want to cover them and as you get older the white comes through quickly.
Do what you feel comfy with.

thanks for the replies. I feel better with black hair but dont know if im willing to commit to the upkeep :D i suppose dying hair once a month or so isnt huge but ive got away doing once a year, if that. I dont think id overly mind being salt and pepper, or even all white, but its the in between stage of getting there i dont think id like. Also does white/grey hair mean i could start dying my hair all the funky pastel colours ive never been able to get?

If/when your hair goes all white, yes you can try the pastels etc. Hard to say how long it could take...I've had increasing no. of greys for years. Absolutely not dyeing it...the root growth would do my head in. Do you have any family examples to judge against?

Got some white hairs around the same time as you. Ten years on still predominantly my original dark colour so haven't bothered to do anything. No one else has commented and even my dc don't mention it and they would if it was obvious. I guess if you don't want to start with dye yet you could take a selfie every couple of months to monitor it. On photos you wouldn't notice my white hairs. I might start to do something when you would notice it on a photo.

I think dying your hair black to cover the grey is the worst thing you can do: it never looks good and you'll be at the salon every 5 minutes trying to hide the regrowth!

I've been going grey since the age of 19. Now at 45 I have stopped covering it up and just have greying hair.
