How do people do the school run when one has chicken pox?

DD (almost 4) has chicken pox, and I have no idea how to get DS to school!

We live around 2 miles from school and I don't drive. DH can't take annual leave this week as he took it last week to be off with us for half term!

We usually get the bus to school, but obviously that's out. It's too far for DD to walk there and back twice a day! Especially when she's feeling poorly.

None of our friends live this far out of school so wouldn't be able to take him with them. I'm just totally stumped as to what to do! Any ideas?

how old is the school child?

LoafofSellotape · 03/06/2019 09:51

You could ring the school and ask if there is a teacher passing on their way to work if you don't know any other parents who would help.

can any friends help? even if they dont live near, cant they make a special journey?

Would she still fit in a buggy?

If one of my friends was that desperate, I wouldn't mind doing a bit of a detour to pick up a child. Have you asked round - they could maybe set up a rota?

DS is 8.
I do know his actual class teacher goes past our house, but I wasn't sure if that would go against their safe guarding rules etc?

She does still fit in a buggy. I was thinking of borrowing one from someone, and just keeping her away from people, maybe get there early/late to avoid people.

Sorry didn't say in OP, all the people we're friends with walk to school cos they live closer, it would be too far out of their way to get him.

how long is chicken pox contagious? i thought it was contagious even before the spots arrive?

mimi14 · 03/06/2019 10:00

I think 2/3 days before the spots arrive, then contagious until they have all crusted over.

i think the buggy/late arrival, would be a good idea

My DD was much younger when I had this problem, but she went in the buggy. If I had to go into the playground etc then I popped the raincover over until we were free of people again.

Last time I had to do this (d&v bug, not chickenpox) I put infectious child in the buggy with the rain cover on. Thankfully he fell asleep on the way.

Thanks. Going to have to try and get hold of a buggy I think.
