Money for interrailing

DD is going interrailing later this month. The hostels she will be staying accept cash only. What is the best way for her to take enough money with her?

Tell the bank she's going away and use an international ATM. There are many of them.

I just used to get a few days worth at a time. Which countries?

Interrailing ist Europe, she can just use a cash machine as she would in the UK. I'd take 2 card and keep one in my wallet and one hidden elsewhere in luggage or a flat body belt wallet under clothes just in case of getting mugged or pick pocketed but she's as safe or otherwise as on a train from London to Edinburgh.

Thank you everyone

I have asked on a student forum as well, and everyone has suggested a prepaid card - Caxton or Revolut. I don't know which countries so am not sure if they all use euros. Obviously she will take some currency as well. So maybe she should take her debit card, prepaid card (which I can top up in case of emergency) and some currency?

I think an under clothes money belt needs to be purchased as well.

Banks are no longer interested in whether we are travelling now, but it is still worth mentioning.

I've used Caxton. It's a really cheap way of getting cash out.

I've used the Halifax Clarity and it works well

That one isn't even mentioned on the Which? website Avocado. I will check out the link, thank you.

Just realised Clarity is a credit card. DD has no credit rating so will stick to a prepaid debit card this time.

I always give mine a preloaded visa card for emergency usage with sufficient for a couple of nights accommodation and food and a new mobile phone. They are told not to spend it outside of emergency and keep it somewhere separate and safe, apart from all other cards and cash. That’s usually somewhere like in a plastic bag inside a folded pair of socks.
It’s only been used twice and both times I was really glad they’d got it.

Usually they take some currency and use ATMs locally unless a closed currency. I ping to their accounts if they need top ups.

I have looked at all the options and am undecided as to which one(s) to go for. DD will be travelling in the eurozone and the Czech Republic.

Options are:

  1. Revolut (free ATM and top ups) prepaid debit card (sterling) and Czech currency in cash, plus some euros in cash
  1. Caxton (free ATM and top ups) prepaid debit card (euros) and Czech currency in cash, plus some euros in cash
  1. One of each card plus Czech currency and euros in cash. This would be in case one of the cards went missing.

Would DD be able to get Czech currency with either card from ATMs in the Czech Republic?
