Freezing sandwiches for the week ahead

Does anyone do this? Make up a batch of sandwiches for DC packed lunches, individually wrap them and freeze them on a Sunday night. Grab one each morning instead of making them as and when during the week. For the record, they'd be ham sandwiches (no butter) or cheese sandwiches.

Totally grim or genius idea?

Lots of people do this. I think it's a good idea but others don't. I've heard of someone who did a whole terms worth at a time.

My dm used to do this for our school lunches. It was gross. The bread was always damp and unpleasant to eat.

But I always freeze bread/rolls and they never end up damp or soggy.

I'd take one out each evening for by the following days lunch time so they'd be fully defrosted.

Try it yourself first, make one put it in the freezer tonight and have it for your lunch tomorrow? That way you know what your giving your children.

I find the idea revolting, although I know people do it.

I freeze bread and rolls, and they are fine, but sandwiches seem to go soggy.
Damp bread is gross.

Soontobe60 · 02/06/2019 17:00

I used to do this. Don't use salad, or wet fillings. Ham or cheese is ok. Wrap in kitchen roll then foil. Reuse the foil!
Alternatively is to just use frozen bread each morning.

AudacityOfHope · 02/06/2019 17:01

Never tried it but I think it sounds revolting! I wouldn't freeze cheese, defrost it in a plastic box over the course of a morning, then expect it to be a good culinary experience Confused

Just make sandwiches the night before. It takes 3 minutes. I commute a long way for work. I make breakfast, lunch and dinner for myself to take with me every day, at least one of those meals is a sandwich. I manage that on top of 2 dc and a 5am wake up for work. It really is no hassle. Better than an awful soggy sandwich every day.

I freeze grated cheese too. I buy a huge bag from my local farmers/butchers market once a month then bag it up to smaller bags and freeze the rest. It's always fine.

My frozen bread is fine and my frozen cheese is fine. Technically a frozen cheese sandwich will also be fine Grin

I'll give it a go and see how it turns out.

For background relevance, multiple DC in 3 separate schools, disabled DC, I work full time and DH isn't around in the mornings. I'm on my knees Smile
