Giant's Causeway

We are going to Belfast next weekend with my in-laws, who are visiting from overseas. I thought we should take them to the Giant's Causeway.

MIL has a bad knee, she can walk (and has to) but not climb or do anything too difficult/strenuous. Is it at all possible to see some of it without doing a lot of walking?

I was there over 15 years ago and I know we spent a couple of hours walking, and it was amazing, but that's all I remember!

Thanks!

You can get a bus at the top that drives you down to the stones and back up again. There are bench’s there so she can watch if the rest of you want to explore further.
I can’t remember if you can pay on the bus but it’s worth checking as entry is for the visitor centre, entry to the stones are free. If you go up the side of the building you get to the back of the building where the bus is without being charged. NT don’t make it obvious but will save you quite a bit.

Irishmummy - do you happen to know if there's much difference between visiting on a weekday or a weekend during the summer holiday? Is it just mad busy there all the time?

CraicMammy · 02/06/2019 13:39

If you’re in the NT then it’s free entry. The bus is great, but once you get to the actual causeway it’s slippy underfoot. There’s a wee wait for the bus to take you back to the top, which won’t be great if it’s cold or wet. Not much shelter or places to sit at the bottom

If you avoid the weekends and pick a wet weekday most days Grin you shouldn't be overly bothered by crowds.

Hah, in my head it's obviously going to be gloriously sunny, for five days, across the whole of Ireland. And hot too! Seriously every holiday I've been on for the past three years it's poured with rain.

Last time I went in the summer holidays it’s a lovely day and it was very busy so lots of people on the stones. There is still plenty of room though!! Had to wait in line for the bus. It seems to be getting more popular and there where a lot more foreign visitors than when I’d been years before. I blame GOT Smile

Visitors centre is fab and well worth getting NT membership as it covers Carrick a Reed rope bridge as well. Go early or go last thing in the day is my advice

Redshoeblueshoe · 02/06/2019 14:22

I'm going later this month. I can hardly wait

HoppityChicken · 02/06/2019 14:24

Thanks Irishmummy - we were going to come up from Dublin on a day trip (tour) but I'm pushing for two nights in Belfast now so we can go from there and do the Titanic as well. Really looking forward to it!

We went af Easter and it was marvellous. You can get a bus to the Causeway. I think it’s included in the entry ticket/NT membership. I recommend the audio guide too - also included in entry.

Carrick a Rede ropebridge is spectacular, but not for the faint hearted, and inaccessible if you have mobility issues. Certainly get there early, as tickets are timed, and you may need to wait over an hour at busy times.

Thank you very much Irishmummy BikeRunSki IWentAwayIStayedAway CraicMammy
I forgot I'd started this thread! Blush

We are not NT members so I will try to avoid the visitor centre, but is there any other place to park?
