To the lady in aldi this afternoon, who complimented my son on being helpful and polite, thank you.

What you don't know is he has asd and adhd, that he's having a really hard time as he's not allowed on the school residential on Monday due to his issues (whole other thread), that he'd had a huge meltdown before we left that was spectacular even by our standards, that he's coming to terms with the accident that left his dad permanently disabled and has left him angry at the world.

You won't have realised how much we needed that small bit of positivity in our lives right now. I had a little cry when I got in.

On the small chance you're in here. Thank you.

Aww that's lovely. You could encourage your son to write down what she said, keeping a journal or having a pinboard type thing of positive stuff is really helpful for boosting self esteem I think. Smile

Just like people don't always realise the impact it has when they pass horrible comments. It also works the other way. Its lovely to hear a positive story.

Tillymintsmama what a great idea, we have a mindfulness diary thing but he struggled to write positive stuff in. Will definitely so this.

I love to compliment children’s behaviour (when deserved).

This week DD2 (8) has been staying with my sister, who is pregnant, with extra appointments due to some concerns. I assured DSis that DD will be fine in waiting room with iPad, but she has been in to watch her twin cousins scan and been into a fetal medicine consultation. She was praised for being so good on both occasions.

Forgot to say well done to your DS, things like that compliment can really help when they are having a tough time

humblebumblebees · 01/06/2019 20:52

Lovely to hear this. Thank you for telling us. I do hope she's on mumsnet and reads this. Sometimes it can seem like small kindnesses go unnoticed so it's wonderful to know the difference it made for you and your DS at a difficult time.
