Relocation to Dorset/Hampshire

Hi Mummies, after a recent holiday to Dorset, my DH and I reopened a conversation that we have several times a year about relocation. We currently live in greater London, within 30 mins of central London and with our friends all around us. Both of our families have moved away, so our friends are our support network. Despite being generally happy, we really crave a slower pace of life and it would be lovely for our children to have more family nearby. We are in love with the coast and the country side and like the idea of Dorset or Hampshire, as it's within 2-3 hrs of our friends, but much closer to my side of the family. We have two children, who are both in lower primary school. They are settled and happy, but I don't think it'd be too unsettling to uproot them at this age. What I want to know is whether any of you have made a smilier move and how it went. Whether Dorset or Hampshire are good for growing families, including teenagers. What areas you would recommend? Would it be difficult to get my children into good schools? Sorry, my head is all over the place and I'd appreciate any advise you may have. Thank you

This is a few years ahead, but if you don't want grammar, Priestlands in Lymington and Highcliffe have lovely, leafy comps with great music studios and nice facilities generally (Ofsted = good). Outstanding state schools are Twynham in Christchurch, Thornden in Chandlers Ford and Hounsdown in Totton, for science especially.

Peter Symonds in Winchester is an especially renowned 6th form college, Brockenhurst College is also very good.

education was problem on the island due to some very badly managed school reorganisation a few years ago and people still mention it here on Mn as a problem when ever , IOW is mentioned , but that was afew years ago now, its changed a lot.. There are quite a few MNetters here , (my DCs are no longer in the education system) but you can get advice from theMN local page for IOW

Thinking I must know a few of these posters. We live in Fordingbridge, just up the road from Ringwood, just on the new forest boundary line. Our DC are never bored... It's a very lovely place to live. Quiet but easy to get to everything you need with a car.

I would definitely not move to Bournemouth for the grammar schools. I have a child a one of them and I think the local comps Christchurch or Ringwood for example would be a far better choice.

Try Verwood. Someone said that to me 5 years ago then we moved here. Absolutely love it. It’s just up the road from Ringwood but more village like than Ringwood Smile

Happy to help with any questions!

SusieW1978 - did you make the move?

We’re in a v similar situation - we live in Oxfordshire and are happy and settled in a little village where our girls go to the local primary school BUT we would really like to be by the coast and Dorset seems like the nicest and closest option. My OH kitesurfs and enjoys surfing so the call of the sea is there!!

I seemed to have read everything going on the following places but am still none the wiser -

Swanage
Wareham
Wimborne
Highcliffe
Dorchester
Villages near Bournemouth
Weymouth
Poole

We’re even considered hoping along a bit to Chichester and the Witterings in Sussex.

Any words of wisdom? Schools are a big priority along with somewhere pretty as we’re lucky where we are now!
