Just Eat- possible scam

I haven’t had a Just Eat account before. In the past couple of weeks I’ve had a few emails from them- I assumed they were circulars/offers/adverts and didn’t open them (subject lines such as “Eat Along with Europe’s biggest singalong” and “10% off this Sunday and Monday”).

However, the most recent one caught my eye as the subject line used a name; “Charlotte, share the love with 15% off”- not my name. When I opened the email it seemed there’s a Just Eat account using my email address but not my name. I went to the website and put in my email address and requested to reset password, for which the link arrived in my email inbox.

Once I’d gained access to the account, I could see the first and last name, phone number and delivery address of the person who’d set up the account. The address is in my city, around 5 miles away. I don’t recognise the name or phone number.

There was one order placed on 6th May from a local takeaway (kebab, pizza, ice cream and deep fried mars bars! Totalling £42) but it says below that it wasn’t paid for online and to remember to pay the delivery driver on arrival. It then says “cancelled” below the order.

I’ve done an online chat with Just Eat and had a phone call back from a supervisor and they’re looking into it all.

I don’t get what the motivation would be for someone to use my email address to set up a Just Eat account, when they could easily set up a free hotmail account to use. As it was never my account, it’s not like they’ve hacked an account with bank details saved etc.

I’m also concerned about the fact that the address in nearby, not just a random address in another city. Could it be someone who knows me, using my address for some reason?!

Very strange!

That's very odd.
Do you have teenage kids by any chance who may have let a friend use your email to set up the account to try and buy alcohol?

(DD told me of a mate who did this then cancelled the order when they realised they'd need to provide ID to the delivery driver. Not Just Eat - just a local takeaway)

Nope, just me and 5yo DD!

My dh regularly gets a text from asda to say the order is it for delivery, when we haven't ordered, it's just someone who's wrongly entered his mobile number, could this be the case for you with the email address, they've put dot com rather then dot co.uk? And its just coincidence that they're nearby?

Riverside85 · 01/06/2019 14:31

Hmm I don’t think so as my email address is my first name and last name, neither of which are the same as the first name and last name used on the account.

I can see the scenario. Visiting nephew asking what my login is, but putting a dot between my first and last name @hotmail (which isn’t my address) but putting the order in his name. That happened to us once. We wouldn’t have known except he asked me to check when he placed the order but I didn’t have an email confirmation. It was the first time he used it so he didn’t realise he was setting up a new account instead of using mine.

Is the person Charlotte Baker and you are Charlotte Jones.
Say this other Charlotte Jones is now married to Johnny Baker, but still using [email protected] as an email. So her hubby orders using (what he thinks) is her email to order Just Eat using [email protected] & his name EXCEPT it just happens to be YOUR email he's used?

Riverside85 · 01/06/2019 15:49

No, using totally different names; my maiden name is Susie Smith, my married name is Susie Jones. My email address is [email protected] (my maiden name). The name used for the account is Charlotte Black. Neither the first name or surname is the same as my first name or maiden or married surname.

(All names changed)

My actual name is not as common as Susie Smith/Jones!

How odd! The only reason I can think of someone using a different email address is to get a promotion that's only available to new customers, but as you say, why not make a new email address up, it only takes minutes!
Did JustEat get back in touch with you?
