What birthday present do you buy for children you e never met?!

DD has 4th party to go to tomorrow. To top it off they’re twins so I have to get two presents. They’re from her nursery though so I’ve never really met them before (never met the parents). So what the hell do I buy? No idea what they like, what they might have.
Any ideas for cheap presents that are generic but not shit? Or can I get away with one slightly more expensive present like a game they could share. Or is that mean to twins? I can’t think!

Books

A book each - lots to choose from.

Include receipt so they can exchange or ask for an exchange card

Magmatic80 · 01/06/2019 07:31

Books.

I vote cash or book token

ImTakingTheEssence · 01/06/2019 07:33

I always get the £10 pack of playdoh with the shapes from argos if there Younger kids. Or I text the parent before the party asking what things the kid likes and go from there.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 01/06/2019 07:34

I usually stock up when things are reduced ready for parties. My go to are a colouring book with pencils. Or a book - Tesco have 2 for £7 with a small toy or jewellery/hair bows.

Small Lego sets go down well.

Personally I wouldn't buy a joint gift for twins unless you know them well.

BiscuitDrama · 01/06/2019 07:35

At four, jigsaw or orchard game like supermarket.

soundsystem · 01/06/2019 07:36

We usually get stickers/craft stuff - Tiger have loads of good bits.

Readysetcake · 01/06/2019 07:37

I did think of books but wasn’t sure. I could just get DD to pick two she likes the look of. Hate the thought of going to the shops when it’s going to be such lovely weather.

Books
Small orchard games
Play doh
Small Duplo or lego juniors sets

I wouldn’t give a gift to share, that is a bit mean for twins.

cheercaptain · 01/06/2019 07:38

2 gifts instead of 1. Depends how much you want to spend. I would spend £5 - £10 for school friends, but as close to £5 as possible. You could check in the Argos 2 for £15 toys. You could also get a craft kit or book. I like to check TKMaxx Toys and Books Section.

Readysetcake · 01/06/2019 07:39

Tiger is a good shout, thanks! I always forget we have one.

They are two separate people so no to a joint gift. Can you go to The Works and he
T a bundle of books? They sometimes do a 5 for £5 offer.

Singingcricket · 01/06/2019 07:45

Lots of imaginary play at this age. Maybe a few bits of play food?

Or two books?

Or some craft things like paper edging scissors, good quality colouring books, or some Play doh?

Or failing any of those, Galt Toys are good (and have an age guide on their site).

Or Djeco stickers and and stencils which come in a variety of prizes and some are very reasonable.

Singingcricket · 01/06/2019 07:45

prices not prizes!

Sewrainbow · 01/06/2019 09:03

I'd go to somewhere like The Works and either get some books, colouring stuff or jigsaw. While my dc were young and went to loads of generic whole class parties I'd keep a selection of cheap bits for this purpose. Little children like a present not cash in a card and I wouldn't want to spend much on children I don't know. When my children received too much of the same or duplicates I had no qualms about regifting them either..

I'm only starting £10 in a card for dc closer friends who are getting in to double figures and I really don't know what they like!

Readysetcake · 01/06/2019 12:49

I got modelling clay and jumping putty in tiger for £6 each. That place is awesome. Thanks for the help everyone!

For future reference, get a selection of generic
presents when they're on offer eg small Lego boxes, soft toys, felt tips, books etc

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 01/06/2019 17:12

Books or a game (I’ve also bought a joint game for twins in the past that they can play together)

Xiaoxiong · 01/06/2019 17:17

Middle of Lidl and TK Maxx are great for this. I got a load of Lego activity books and Horrible Science kits for £2.99 and keep them in an emergency present stash with wrapping paper and sellotape. Usually accessed a few mins before rushing to a kids' birthday party I RSVPed to 3 months ago and forgot about completely...

Parker231 · 01/06/2019 17:17

We have b/g twins - at that age Lego was the best shared present.

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/06/2019 17:23

Playmobil! They won't care even if you just get a £4.99 box each, and they'll play with it throughout their childhoods. Better than random gubbins that'll just end up in landfill.
