The most boring thread of all time

I've got a rotary washing line to put up. My previous house was a tiny paved garden with a hole already for a rotary washing line so there was no contest.

Now I've got a 100ft garden I'm not sure where to put it.

A) at the end of the garden. We back on to fields and no path along the grass.

B) right bang in the middle (seems traditional)

C) nearer the house (seems more convenient)

No (walking) kids just yet but want to enjoy the garden without the eyesore of a washing line so we will take it down when we have BBQ parties.

Also, how does mowing the grass work? Do you mow around yours or mow over the hole thing (I got a stake to put in the ground).

As I said, such a boring post but washing is one of my lesser hated chores and I'm quite exited to get my clothes line dried. 5 years ago I'd be on the piss right now

I’m working on moving mine, it’s right in the middle and I hate it now. It’s convenient and practical but I’ve got it into my head that I hate it so it’ll have to move!

Rainbowqueeen · 01/06/2019 07:57

I’d put it in the part of the garden you use the least.
But also take into account what you will use the least as DC grow

MintyT · 01/06/2019 08:01

End of the garden out of the way but in a long garden a washing line would be nice on windy days - omg I've turned into my mother

IamEarthymama · 01/06/2019 08:05

Oh, with a long garden I would definitely have a long washing line with long poles at either end and a pulley. Oh and a pole to hoist it up in the middle!

I would keep the rotary for your period knickers and anything else that would mar the perfection of that fantasy washing line 😉😊

cafenoirbiscuit · 01/06/2019 08:08

Where is the sun? Clothes dry faster out of the shade

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 01/06/2019 08:10

Get one that fixes to the wall and folds up when not in use. Brabantia do one. More expensive, but much much better.

ThisIsTheEndgame · 01/06/2019 08:13

Just.coming to recommend the Brabantia one that @Foxyloxy1plus1 mentioned. It's genius.

dudsville · 01/06/2019 08:18

My rotary line is in the place the previous owners chose. It's in the quarter of the garden first accessed off the kitchen door. Makes sense. And they put paving the way up to it so I'm not going to move it. On the one hand it helps that I can see it easily from kitchen window. No chance I'll forget the washing. On the other, it's an eyesore when not in use. And it's easy to mow around/ over.

WizzyBee · 01/06/2019 08:18

Mine is at the end of the garden in the sun.
You can take them out of the socket to mow the grass but make sure you know EXACTLY where it is. I put my line in the garage over winter and spent bloody hours trying to find the damn hole again in the spring. Grin

No advice, but this thread has made me chuckle...and I'm also watching for drier advice!
I am also looking forward to getting a rotary drier with much excitement. I'd like a retractable washing line too that I could occasionally pull out to hang whites on so they get bleached by the sun....and so I can admire them all white and lovely and in the sunshine....Blush
Apparently JOMO and enjoying the simple things in life is very on trend don't you know

PuppyMonkey · 01/06/2019 08:24

No laundry thread is EVER boring OP.Grin

You need it in the place that gets the most sun for the longest time.

Helpmedecide123 · 01/06/2019 08:42

I have a double retractable line. It's awesome. It's at the end of the garden nearest the house to make it easier to hang washing out

AliMonkey · 01/06/2019 08:50

Based on my experience, you’ll use it less if it’s far away, eg you won’t bother if the grass is a bit wet or long or muddy. I have mine very close to the house and use it at least 10 months of the year. But the line lives inside when not being used - in this house it lives in utility room, previously has been in shed or garage. If know that’s not an option for everyone but guessing that with 100 foot garden you are likely to have largish house with space to store it. I always thought that was the point of a rotary line - it is temporary. Lines across the garden are more permanent and a pain with young children.

In terms of mowing, you can mow round it (I’ve done so occasionally when timed it badly) but will leave a few inches of unmown grass. If the stake comes with a “lid”, it will break once mown over a few times, but pretty pointless - though would have stopped the frog that ended up dead in the bottom of my line after presumably getting into the hole before I shoved the line in top of him!

WonkyDonk87 · 01/06/2019 08:51

I have the brabantia one that fixes to the wall and I LOVE IT. Closes away nicely so we can sit and look down the garden in the evenings as the sun sets. However it's not as big as a traditional one, so I'm campaigning DH to agree to a line as well for sheets. Grin

Mac47 · 01/06/2019 09:03

Retractable long line for me with a prop.

SammySamSam09 · 01/06/2019 09:27

My husband moved ours off the grass and on to the patio. Its sitting flush with the flagstones so its not a tripping hazard or I would be forever falling over it as I'm particulary clumsy.

TheQueef · 01/06/2019 09:32

Of you have a naturally windier spot in the sun.
Ours goes in the cupboard when not used so eyesore isn't a consideration.
