Hull v sheffield v leeds

Hey all, I've recently just been acceoted onto my first ever proper job earning 20k a year which i think is a fab initial wage at 20, however I'm in a bit of a dilema. The company has offices in the three listed cities and I'm just struggling to really decide which one to go to, so would really appreciate any opinions and advice.

My main focus is really affordability, I'd like to rent my own place if possible, I've got used to living by myself in my home town, so i don't think i could really deal with flatmates. I'm not likely ever going to earn over 25k so that also affects long term affordability for buying a house when I'm older.

I enjoy hiking and being outdoors so sheffield is drawing me in with the peaks, but i also love the idea of living in a bigger city like leeds. Hull is closest to family but not by much and seems cheaper then the other too.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve lived in Hull and now live in Leeds. As much as I loved Hull I much prefer Leeds and how much buzzier it is. Sheffield is also a good city.

Have you visited?

Bunnybigears · 31/05/2019 20:32

I would say Sheffield it's a great city and I think rents would be cheaper there than Leeds for similar types of area. Also Leeds 1 way system is a nightmare and Sheffield has the tram which is handy if you dont drive or dont want to drive in the city centre.

Disfordarkchocolate · 31/05/2019 20:51

Sheffield or Leeds.
Leeds is easy for transport to Hull though

glenthebattleostrich · 31/05/2019 20:53

Sheffield. Cheaper for rent, some great urban walks and I prefer it to Leeds.

Leeds is only half an hour by train though so easy to get to.

MrsGrindah · 31/05/2019 20:53

I think Leeds is the better city but I’m biased! However I do think you might struggle to find decent affordable accommodation esp. if you don’t want to share.

Anoni · 31/05/2019 20:55

See that's my worry, ledds seems very busy and alive which i love, but so expensive.

No one for hull then? Grin

Personally I'd choose Leeds or Sheffield. Why not book a week/weekend and spend a little time up there, see where you'd feel happy?

thenightsky · 31/05/2019 20:57

Leeds, Sheffield, Hull. In that order.

thenightsky · 31/05/2019 20:58

And what do you mean by Leeds is expensive? Do you mean house prices, in which case which part are you looking at? DD and her DP are both employed in Leeds and have bought. Neither on massive salaries.

InspirationUnavailable · 31/05/2019 20:58

Another vote for Leeds or Sheffield. Far better connected than Hull which is a out on a limb somewhat. From Leeds you can be in either Manchester or the coast in an hour which is a bit plus point. But in terms of balancing an outdoorsy lifestyle with the benefits of living in a city I’d hands down vote for Sheffield.

MatthewBramble · 31/05/2019 20:58

Old saying "From Hull & Halifax & Hell, Good Lord deliver me."
No mention of Leeds or Sheffield you notice.

AuntieMarys · 31/05/2019 20:58

Leeds.
Without a doubt

60secondfacetimer · 31/05/2019 21:02

Another for Leeds.

Frouby · 31/05/2019 21:03

Lived in Hull and live just outside Sheffield and grew up there.

Sheffield is amazing. Hull not so much.

Leeds is pretty cool too but I think it's probably more expensive than Sheffield.

You could live on the outskirts of Sheffield and bus/train/tram into work if cost is an issue. There is a train station at Meadowhall and Rotherham with pretty regular trains in.

scarecrowhead · 31/05/2019 21:05

Sheffield just because it has the beautiful Peaks right next to it

Anoni · 31/05/2019 21:07

Leeds seems more expensive to rent and stuff on a 20k a year salary, especially if i want to live alone. After tax and pensions I'll be taking home about 1.3k a month, so obviously looking at the cost of renting is important and in Leeds it seems higher.

I've been to all the cities in question I'm just really struggling to decide and pin point which one, it's the first time I've ever moved away from my home town

Can i ask why leeds without a doubt? Sorry if that's rude

Leeds - much easier to change jobs in the future than the other two. (Sheffield second.)

Loopytiles · 31/05/2019 21:09
  1. Leeds
  2. Sheffield
  3. Hull
Loopytiles · 31/05/2019 21:10

As PPs say, more jobs in Leeds for the future.

Faster · 31/05/2019 21:13

I currently live in Leeds, I’m Hull born and bred.
Hull had benefits of being very affordable, you can rent a 1 bed flat in an OK area for £300pcm. Public transport is a bit shit.
It’s very much out on a limb and there is a ceiling in most careers, it’s a small city.
Leeds is more expensive rental wise (when I first moved I house shared) it’s public transport is much better and there are more career opportunities, especially if you’re willing to commute.

boooey · 31/05/2019 21:18

I used to live in Sheffield and now live in Leeds. Dp is from Hull.
Leeds is where you want to be as a young person, much more going on than Sheffield and better ongoing job prospects.

Sheffield’s city centre is dire apart from the winter gardens. Sheffield has its own charm but I got bored quickly (did 3 years uni and 2 as a working adult)
Although the outskirts are lovely in Sheffield there just isn’t enough happening.
Leeds also has the Dales right on your doorstep for hiking.
Hull is not going to tick the boxes for you I don’t think.
Rent is expensive here (Leeds) but if you can get a 1 bed for £500pm either city centre or headingley /chapel Allerton you should still manage ok.

thenightsky · 31/05/2019 21:24

As I said earlier... Leeds doesn't have to be city centre. Look at living out in Tingley or Morley. A WF (Wakefield) postcode is more affordable than an LS postcode.

thenightsky · 31/05/2019 21:25

Oh, and DD is buying in Tingley on a similar salary to you OP.

MoobaaMoobaa · 31/05/2019 21:27

Just to say I like Hull and love it's History.

But Leeds seems the best place for you, it is busy with lots of stuff to do and you can be out walking in north Yorkshire in no time too.
