What would you put in a new parent's survival hamper?

Friends of mine are expecting their first baby soon and I would like to put together a hamper for them. What would you include? Thinking useful things as well as treats.

-Some nice baby wash stuff- the Burts bees baby range smells lovely
-some basics like baby grows/sleepsuits. I mostly got 0-3 given to me so maybe up to 1 month or 3-6 is better.
-1 tog lightweight sleeping bag for the summer (instead of using blankets (see those by Gro but you can get them cheaper elsewhere)
-Teething gel/teething ring
-changing essentials like nappies, wipes, nappy sacks, sudacrem
-Nice biscuits for the new parents
-things I have found incredibly useful but are a bit more expensive-Hana wrap sling (about £30), GroEgg thermometer for the room (about £20), feeding pillow.

One of our friends gave us all the things they found helpful when we had our son and it was lovely. Things like snufflebabe, teetha chamomile teething granules, the snufflebabe saline nose drops, anbesol liquid, then practical things for me too like a refillable big water bottle, extra long phone charger cable, some nice child’s farm baby toiletries and then a little comfort blanket for my son and some sweets and bits. It was really appreciated and the most thoughtful gift we had

Travel mug for tea/coffee so you can drink it near the baby without worrying about spills, and so it stays hot for ages!

Thanks for the ideas. I was thinking of things for them rather than the baby.

Cup with a lid - thirsty work pushing a pram
Biscuit tin
Frozen home made meals
Voucher for a takeaway
Babysitting voucher
May even a cleaner for a few hours?

For baby - socks - so many outfits don’t come with socks
As PP baby creams and medication for teething

I did a plastic tool box for the car - creams nappies cloths spare change etc so parent didnt have to over pack on a day trip out

We got a friend some vouchers for a fancy food shop that did deliveries of proper food not takeaway food. We spent like £50 but it was when she'd had her second in 2 years and said was best present she'd ever had as had lived off of toast for 2 weeks

BlueBrush · 31/05/2019 17:09

Hand cream! I never used it until I had a baby, but got really dry hands from washing them all the time.

MagpieTree · 31/05/2019 17:11

@kshaw do you remember the company you used? I had thought of this but haven't found a decent one.

A voucher for 2 hours holding the baby while they nap 😴

springgreensunshine · 31/05/2019 17:14

Biscuits and chocolate. And more chocolate. Or some healthier snack bars if you don't want to go full-on sugar?

Maybe a couple of easy to read magazines?

kshaw · 31/05/2019 17:21

www.cookfood.net/shops/NorthLeeds

It was here but obviously it's in leeds, no idea where you're based xx

The loveliest thing I got (and I admit this is niche!) was stinky camembert and a pot of posh pate and an entire French Stick to myself. Mum in law bought it for me the night I got home from the hospital and I cried - I'd spent my whole pregnancy craving them and it was just lovely.

Other highlights for us rather than the kids were:

  • non-spillable insulated travel mug
  • Google Play voucher for renting movies
  • Takeaway vouchers
  • Toby Carvery gift card (early days we suddenly realised the benefit of being able to tag team eating while out and not worrying about waiting for food. Also... yorkshire pudding!
  • Magnesium bath stuff to ease my aches and pains.

I think it's so lovely to do bits for the grownups.

MagpieTree · 31/05/2019 18:14

Lovely ideas, thank you.

Cook is country wide so that might be an idea.

A really big muslin - boden do lovely ones. And they can be used for anything.

Nice bubble bath

COOK voucher or other easy meal ideas

kshaw · 31/05/2019 18:49

Didn't realise cook was a nationwide thing!

PurpleWithRed · 31/05/2019 18:50

Babysitting vouchers, if you can babysit for them.

IntoValhalla · 31/05/2019 18:54

My massive thermos mug with a lid was the best present I got post-baby! Kept my brew hot and I didn’t have to worry about spilling it on the baby - I didn’t realise that breastfeeding really is thirsty work!!
Another friend got us a voucher for Pizza Hut delivery which was amazing! On a particular busy or difficult night, all we had to do was order it online, quote the voucher code and it arrived quick smart, already paid for Grin

Her0utdoors · 31/05/2019 19:07

For them, some decent lube? I wish I'd had some after my first was born and still had the energy /inclination to have sex with the idiot I'm married too. Nobody told me how dry the post partum vagina could be!

DailyFailAreTwats · 31/05/2019 19:17

Vouchers for Cook are great. We gave a new parent a week of Cook meals for two, delivered frozen. They loved them!!

Lwmommy · 31/05/2019 19:31

If they don't have it already then Netflix or now tv month pass.
