How many hours of lessons did it take you to pass your driving test?

I feel like I will never pass the driving test, I have just failed my fourth attempt for the silliest reasons (1. Supposedly I stopped but didn't make a complete stop 2. I drove down a road that was too narrow, but most roads are too narrow around here and I was guided down it 3. I got in the correct lane at the roundabout but I need better positioning).

I have been trying to learn with my husband independently but I feel like no matter what I will fail unless I get private lessons or something 🤷‍♀️

Did you take private lessons? How many hours did you do?

An hour a week, every week, increasing to 2 hours towards the end for 9 months.

And I still failed first time 😆

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/06/2019 09:00

50 hours over 6 weeks. Was intense, but I passed first time. I needed that intensity to really build the habit, I’d never have learnt with a couple of hours a week for months.

You need proper driving lessons though, your DH won’t know how to teach you to the test, and it’s very specific. He’ll also likely be teaching you his bad habits without realising. Get a proper instructor/

chocsaregone · 01/06/2019 09:07

40+
But no practising with other people in between.

Passed third time. I mostly got nervous on test day

Good luck you'll do it eventually

That was in 1983 and quite the norm to have that many/few lessons.

Roads were very different back then - I took my test in 1981 after just 2 "proper" lessons with an instructor. I "learned" just by driving around town in my parent's car for a couple of months, i.e. to/from school, going shopping, to/from Dad's work etc. But roads were so much quieter and drivers didn't drive so badly/fast in those days. My son has had 15 lessons with a proper instructor and is taking his test next week. I've also been out with him to practice what he's been doing in the lessons and to get him used to dealing with all the idiots he's going to encounter, i.e. pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers so he knows how to react when idiots do stupid things (a daily occurrence on every journey).

Soola · 01/06/2019 09:16

@Kazzyhoward

Yes it was different back then and I think you definitely need more than six lessons today but I don’t think having 50/100 lessons is necessary and I believe that people need to be taught confidence.

Babyduck3 · 01/06/2019 09:19

Driving hasn't come naturally to me, I've really struggled, I've been having weekly lessons since January and I'm still no where near attempting my test. I would definitely get some private lessons, they will teach you how to pass.
If your dead set against private lessons, there's lots of lessons on YouTube that might help.

gamerchick · 01/06/2019 09:23

114 hours Grin I did not find it easy to learn and I wasn't easy to teach. But I passed first time.

You need proper lessons, the test has changed since your husband took his. Book an instructor

Teddybear45 · 01/06/2019 09:26

Passed at 35. 104 hours of lessons but I didn’t have a car to practice on. If you do then you will need fewer lessons.

AliciaMayEmory · 01/06/2019 09:30

I think it depends where you live and what the roads/traffic is Ike. I moved areas whist I was learning to drive and the difference was huge. I went from a town with only 40mph dual carriageways and roundabouts but only a couple of sets of traffic lights, to a big city with loads of traffic, different roads, changes in speed limits etc. I could have taken my test much earlier I'd stayed in the first town, but I wouldn't have had the experience that I gained in the city. In the end I had about 60 lessons in total and passed first time.

cluecu · 01/06/2019 09:41

It felt like a million hours for me! In reality I would guess at around 70 hours over 5 tests. I only had lessons with my instructor and went from 1 per week to 2 per week which massively helped. I thought it would go on and on forever but the feeling of finally passing was honestly one of the happiest in my life Grin

When I compare my driving to now, I can see just how much I've improved and if I had passed earlier I wouldn't have been readyto drive alone. I never let myself think about the cost of it all though Shock

Whitelisbon · 01/06/2019 09:44

I had about 50 hours, there was an 8 week wait for tests when I did mine, so 16 hours were after I had a test date.
Passed first time, luckily, as lessons were putting a serious dent in the finances.

cluecu · 01/06/2019 09:47

Also I don't know your financial situation but a good instructor will make a huge difference! Partly knowing they can control the clutch and brake makes you feel calmer and this is the same for the test. Also they have so much experience of working with other students of course.

And as much as I love my DH (who is the kindest, calmest and most patient man I know) when I was a new driver, he found it hard to a) disguise his nerves that I was driving and then b) as I improved he couldn't understand why I struggled with manoeuvres that came easily to him which then annoyed me Hmm

Driving can be terrifying, exciting, rewarding, frustrating & boring so it's important to get used to all these feelings with an experienced professional who isn't phased by anything and who you're not emotionally connected to.

Oceanbliss · 01/06/2019 09:56

I had weekly lessons for more than 6 months because I had a massive crush on my driving instructor Smile. He was an instructor who taught you how to drive not just pass your test which is what you really want in a driving instructor.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 01/06/2019 11:57

I was learning to drive for a good few years but I think I had absolutely no confidence in myself which wasn't helped by my first instructor being a complete pervert! Anyway I changed to a woman but kept stopping and starting and eventually passed my test aged 26 ( I had started learning aged 21!) I think if I had stuck to it it probably would have taken about 40 lessons. But I was pretty bad! I passed on my fourth time but the three times I had failed were for very fair reasons. First time I had gone over lanes on a roundabout, 2nd pulled out without doing a final check and a car was coming, 3rd time I can't remember but I think it was a roundabout again!

StrumpersPlunkett · 01/06/2019 12:00

10 sessions with driving instructor
Some hours in parents car but lived away from home so not much.
Failed first time test 4 weeks later passed. Yay!
Was 17

Watfrordmummy · 01/06/2019 12:32

It took my ds 5 attempts to pass; don't lose heart you will pass. I think he got to the point he was overthinking, when he just drove he passed.

Good luck you will get there x
