The point of speed bumps?

We live in a narrow type of urban road, terraced houses with cars parked both sides of the road with a few having drop down kerbs.
A few years ago the council put speed bumps in.
Initially, I thought it would be great, it would really have an impact on the cars that speed...
Not so much it would seem.
Some of the worst offenders are lorries (some with skips on the back) and vans which seem to drive at the bumps and the impact can be felt through our house as we are so close to the street. Other drivers too take the bumps on like a challenge and occassionaly clear the ground and land with a thump on the other side.
Although it has calmed some of the traffic, it has sod all impact on enough of it for me to think it has a beneficial effect.
Has anyone seen benefits or is sthere something else can be done?
I don't think heavy lorries should be allowed down such a narrow street (things bigger than an average white van)
The street gets really congested and there have been many road rage incidents.
We have peitioned for a CPZ but I don;t think thats going to impact the traffic itself.
What do you think?

I live on residential Road which is very narrow lots of cars parked on there no driveways probably only about 100 houses on the road and yet as soon as Carsten until I floor it new ridiculously fast speeds in excess a 50 mph ( after a crash police ask to see neighbours CCTV police could figure out that particular car was going 62 miles an hour ) it's got a 20 mile an hour speed limit on it as it's close to a School.
I would welcome any traffic calming measures there are lots of children on this road it's not going to be long before somebody is killed

I agree that the speed bumps can calm traffic but it hasn't made enough of a difference in my experience.

And there have been close calls on the street.
A person in a stolen car tried to drive e up the pavement! Hotly pursues by the police. He managed to drive into the front if a house, back out, take out two police cars and escaped.
Then the pizza delivery scooter who drives o the pavement.
I would move if we could but right now the road is a nightmare and the speed bumps seem to some drivers as an obstacle to be beaten ot observed making them even more of a risk
