How would you feel if you're 7 yr old had eaten..

Bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes
Chunk of cheese and packet of crisps and fruit juice
Giant bag of choc buttons and fruit shoot
Mac Donald's veg burger and fries and juice

In one day.

Dd is at GMs for the week (we need the childcare and they both love seeing each other). I don't want to ask what she's eaten the rest of the week but pizza and ice cream were mentioned.

I don't want to hurt MiLs feelings, she's lovely and we're grateful but am also now worried about dd being there over the summer hols and gorging on junk food.

Am planning on speaking to dd (we talk about sugar rotting teeth and importance of 5 a day etc) to try to get her to make choices for herself when she's down there. But she's 7. She won't say no if someone buys her a big bag of chocolate!

I wouldn't be concerned for a one off but I'd be very worried if that was my child's diet every day.

Soola · 29/05/2019 21:25

Wouldn’t bother me as she is there for a visit and can eat more healthily when home.

PavlovaFaith · 29/05/2019 21:25

Can you fake a bit of a task from school over the summer holidays? Laminate an eatwell plate and suggest that every meal has to be balanced?

I wouldn’t be concerned. It’s a one off and normal service resumes once they’re home

MollysMummy2010 · 29/05/2019 21:26

That’s a bit rubbish but if her usual diet is good I would let it go- what happens at grandmas stays at grandmas. As long as she knows it’s back to normal service when at home.

Sirzy · 29/05/2019 21:26

If my ds ate it I would be over the moon

But that aside i think it falls into the if you want free childcare then you need to be careful how much you complain

freshstartnewme · 29/05/2019 21:27

I would be concerned that they only had 2 meals.

UCOinanOCG · 29/05/2019 21:28

Sounds like she is having a lovely holiday to me!

bloodywhitecat · 29/05/2019 21:28

If it was 365 days a year I would worry, if it was just an occasional thing I wouldn't bat an eyelid. My kids had jelly and ice cream for breakfast, fish finger sandwiches for dinner and more pick 'n mix than I care to count when they stayed at nanny's but they knew the rules were different at home. They are now both fit, healthy adults with no food hang ups.

Purpleartichoke · 29/05/2019 21:28

In our family, food rules don’t apply at grandma’s house.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 29/05/2019 21:31

Oh my god a fruit shoot Shock

FreeFreesia · 29/05/2019 21:35

I'd think how fab their want your DC to stay overnight & roll my eyes at over indulgence but not say anything. That's what grandparents are for. I'd wonder why you wanted a full breakdown of what's been eaten unless the child was complaining they weren't being fed.

Ffsnosexallowed · 29/05/2019 21:37

Wouldn't bother me at all.

PCBananaHammock · 29/05/2019 21:39

Normal rules don't apply at grandparents house!! Relax. They're having a whale of a time and things will go back to normal when they're home. Even if they ate like this for two weeks it's a holiday. Chill out

DuffBeer · 29/05/2019 21:42

It sounds like they missed lunch!

If she's going to be spending a lot of time with them over the summer then yes I'd definitely set your expectations about having a somewhat healthy diet!

Mrscog · 29/05/2019 21:43

For a one off trip it wouldn’t bother me at all.

m0therofdragons · 29/05/2019 21:44

Mine are at grandparents this week (2 7yos) and the number of wine gums in the car seems excessive and there will be lots of kitkat eating etc. They're having the best week and it won't make them obese. Chill and appreciate the childcare and relationship they're building. I have 3dds so they're saving me £130 a day by not using a cm!

Crimebustersofthesea · 29/05/2019 21:45

You should see what my mum gives my nieces and nephews when they stay! They're at Grandma's, it's not every day.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 29/05/2019 21:46

Wouldn’t give it a second thought tbh.

ThatLibraryMiss · 29/05/2019 21:46

itscalled, it could have been so much worse. It could have been...

lastqueenofscotland · 29/05/2019 21:47

As a one off fine, daily no.

Popskipiekin · 29/05/2019 21:47

It’s fine for the time being but I’d be concerned at that much sugar from all the juice in particular... rather than saying to GM that you don’t want DD to have certain foods, can you ask that she does have some fruit and veg? Maybe phrase it like “we’re really trying to encourage DD to try lots of different types of fruit and veg”. Don’t ban the junk but encourage healthy levels of foods which will provide the nutrition your DD needs.
And yes, definitely need to keep brushing those teeth! Grin

violeticecream · 29/05/2019 21:47

I wouldn't worry at all.

Maybe83 · 29/05/2019 21:47

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
