Vegetables that your children like or will tolerate

Motherof3feminists · 29/05/2019 20:54

Please could you share with me what vegetables your children like and which they will eat with much encouragement bribery?

My children are veggie but they aren't keen on vegetables! I was the same to be fair but now enjoy far more.

Middle one will eat:

Carrots,
Cucumber
Corn on the cob,
Cauliflower,
Tomato based pasta sauce,
Celery in homemade soup,
Any veg blended in soup

Eldest is fairly easy going and will eat most things.

Little one copies big sister's err I can't stand that! But will eat:

carrots,
Cucumber,
celery in soup,
anything blended in soup,
Tomato based pasta sauce,
and will pick at salad leaves

None of them will touch peppers, courgettes, mushrooms or onions. But I can roast peppers, onion and courgettes and blend them into homemade pasta sauce Hmm

I'm trying to get us all eating healthier and want to do more homemade meals but am struggling with their limited likes.

They don't like melted cheese so cauliflower and broccoli cheese aren't an option. I despair.

They've recently decided they'll tolerate curry with various things they like in it.

No one likes green beans. Horrible squeaky things.

Potatoes are fine, but LO not keen although not a vegetable in terms of 5 a day or 10 a day or whatever. Any a day is a bonus.

I'm hoping your list of likes will inspire me.

3-year-old:
Avocado (though recently it has to be mashed, in a bowl, with a spoon Hmm)
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Carrots (prefers steamed in the microwave Hmm)
Sweet potato
Kidney beans, cannelloni beans, haricot beans etc etc (make into a mixed bean chilli in slow cooker)
Sometimes cucumber
Sometimes sweetcorn (if in mixed bean chilli!)
Sometimes mushrooms

1-year-old (14 months)
Not much(!)
Cucumber
Carrots
Peas
Sweetcorn
Mixed beans (as above)
Sweet potato

confusedandemployed · 29/05/2019 21:02

DD is 6,the only things she's not keen on are avocado and mushrooms.

Silversun83 · 29/05/2019 21:04

Sweet potato does count as a veg by the way so if they like that, would also add to the total (and I have actually heard fairly recently that white potatoes do too but the powers that be decided against publicising that as the 'public' would then think they were being healthy by eating chips.. 🤷)

Toddler will eat literally anything. Preferably off someone else’s plate. 7yo varies but at the moment it’s corn on the cob, spinach, sometimes salad, mushrooms if on pizza, tomatoes only if a base for a sauce, red pepper and sometimes cucumber

expatchouli · 29/05/2019 21:04

DC eat a plate of salad every day.
They eat anything hidden in a sauce or soup.

The only veg DC1 doesn't like is onions if he doesn't know it's there and because MIL always picks onions out of her food
DC2 doesn't like spinach some days, the rest of the time it's considered a favourite.

When they were younger I often resorted to trickery. In the not eating green phase I cooked green and yellow courgette, then did a deal to swap all DC1's "yucky green" for the "nice yellow" Hmm
Blending 3/4 the veg into a sauce and letting them leave the lumps because they ate the sauce as it was so yummy...Hmm

I always expected them to taste everything, even if they didn't eat everything.

PS why does broccoli and cauliflower need cheese on it?

Popskipiekin · 29/05/2019 21:06

Age 2&4
Broccoli (baby trees)
Sprouts (baby cabbages)
Baby sweet corn (baby.... sweet corn Grin)
Cauliflower if with cauliflower
Peas and frozen sweet corn used to be popular but now not for some reason
Raw carrot with hummus

Magic green sauce for pasta (which is any green veg whizzed up with pesto)

Jamie Oliver’s sweet potato curry is popular.

Popskipiekin · 29/05/2019 21:07

*cauliflower if with cheese sauce should have said

Bunnylady53 · 29/05/2019 21:12

DD10 eats virtually no fruit or veg at all & I try really hard not to make a big thing of it but sometimes I despair. She occasionally eats a few grapes or a bit of apple. She likes watermelon. Actually, if you don’t count potatoes, she doesn’t eat any veg. Despite her diet she’s remarkably healthy & manages to swerve bugs etc.

AuditAngel · 29/05/2019 21:13

In various combinations between 3 DC

Peas
Sweet corn (kernels Orion the cob)
Carrots (youngest 2 prefer raw and have roast with raw carrots)
Cabbage (DC1&2)
Sprouts (DC2&3)
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Lettuce (massive amounts)
Cucumber
Peppers (raw not cooked for DC2&3)
Mushrooms (DS only)
Sugar snap peas
Mange tout
Abbas (which are tiny broad beans about the size of peas)
Asparagus

AuditAngel · 29/05/2019 21:14

Forgot onions, although that came as they got older

Wenttoseainasieve · 29/05/2019 21:20

Peas
Sweetcorn
Asparagus
Potatoes
Sweet potato
Kale (must be roasted and crispy)
Spinach
lettuce
Cabbage
Carrot sticks
Brocolli
Cauliflower
Mushrooms
Celery
Mange tout/sugar snap peas
Beetroot
Radish

And 'savoury' fruit:
Tomato
Aubergine
Cucumber
Peppers

Reading that she's actually a good veg eater and she's four. She HATES Brussels sprouts however.

queenofkale · 29/05/2019 21:22

Will eat with no encouragement
green beans
asparagus
peas
Sweet potato
Avocado
Sweet corn (on the cob or otherwise)
Cooked carrots
Spinach cooked
Courgettes
Any tomato pasta sauce with other veg or not
All beans in any way
Onions in any sauce
Celery
Chickpeas

With some encouragement and more mood dependent but usually
Cucumber
Carrot sticks (raw)
Sugar snap peas
Cauliflower
Broccoli

Will not eat
Raw or obvious tomatoes that are not blended.

queenofkale · 29/05/2019 21:24

She's nearly 3
I forgot cabbage in all forms she really likes.
She's pretty good. Although until recently has not been keen on "raw" veg but we have turned a corner and she now will eat allot more. I'm a firm just keep offering and don't make a big deal if they don't eat it.

Motherof3feminists · 29/05/2019 21:35

expatchouli because people always tend to suggest making broccoli or cauliflower cheese to get them to eat more veg.

They oldest two were weaned on lots of purées and ate lots of different veg but now forget it.,

I'm intrigued by roasted kale. Literally sprinkled will oil and roast? Or is it more fancy than that?

PavlovaFaith · 29/05/2019 21:41

3yo eats:
Cucumber
Tomatoes
Spinach
Lettuce occasionally

No cooked veg unless it's blitzed in a sauce. Little bugger!

1yo currently eats anything.

PavlovaFaith · 29/05/2019 21:41

Oh 3yo eats peas! New one 👍🏻

expatchouli · 29/05/2019 21:53

[shudders] I love broccoli. And cauliflower. And melted cheese. But put them together and Envy

Proseccoagain · 30/05/2019 07:45

My two would not eat any vegetables at all when children. They are now 40 and 36 and eat everything! My two DGDs prefer my spaghetti Bolognese because mum (and dad) put vegetables like onions and carrots in the one they have at home. So do I but they don't know it, as it is all finely chopped and blended in!

Lollyice · 30/05/2019 07:49

Ds will only eat mashed carrot and swede.
