Car seat toy for next size up

Puddingsmummy · 29/05/2019 18:38

At the moment I've got a spiral toy wrapped around the car seat handle which keeps baby amused on our car journeys. Now I'm moving up to the next size car seat but there's no 'handle' so nothing to wrap a toy around.
What does everyone else do?

I give DD rattles and toys etc. If she throws them off I just sing to her. To be fair she enjoys looking out of the window too- the rear facing ones are quite high up so they can usually see pretty well.

My little boy (11months) enjoys having a board book (the that's not my ones particuarly) to read and some teething toys to chew on.

Puddingsmummy · 29/05/2019 19:02

Is there nothing to hang in the car? I've had a look but struggling to find something. Baby normally seems mesmerised with his current spiral toy so ideally would like to replace.

I had a steering wheel that attached to the back of the passenger seat. Got it from Amazon.

ReganSomerset · 29/05/2019 19:04

Not as far as I'm aware, but then mine stopped being mesmerised by dangly things quite early on. How old is he?

ImPermanentlyConfused · 29/05/2019 19:11

I used to have a mirror that clipped onto the head rest on the back seat, think you could also clip bits on as well

Noonooyou · 29/05/2019 20:22

I keep the kids in the 'baby' seat until much later than a lot of people. People tend to think that they need to move the babies out at around 1 but this isn't true. For most baby seats, it's to do with where their heads are and their weight. So it could be that you could use the small seat with a handle for longer. Otherwise, hard books are great!

Puddingsmummy · 29/05/2019 21:13

I was moving him up at 6 months as he's big for his age and fits the size range

Something like this

Ideally, don't move him unless he's actually outgrown the seat. The stage 0 ones are safer for young babies than the next size up - don't move him unless you have to. And if you do move him, keep him rear facing.

Byebyefriend · 29/05/2019 21:57

It's safest to keep a baby in the infant (well any car seat range) until they are at the top of the range for that seat rather than moving them because they've reached the bottom of the next seat range.

ReganSomerset · 29/05/2019 21:58

Byebyefriend said it better than me.

Puddingsmummy · 29/05/2019 22:27

@ReganSomerset & @Byebyefriend
I didn't know that, I'll keep him in it a little longer then - thank you

Slightly off topic but isn't the handle meant to be out of the way when they're in the car? Ours pushes over the top if that makes sense.

ElfishBiatch · 29/05/2019 23:36

The ‘handle’ is usually actually a roll bar which handily can also be used as a handle. Check your fitting instructions

Puddingsmummy · 30/05/2019 00:59

@ZippyBungleandGeorge I was told the opposite - it's meant to be up when they are in the car

I had a hauck baby carseat and the handle had to be put back as it is a 0+ carseat so I got a toy that hung off the headrest.. now I just have one of the mirrors on the headrest as my lb is not in a rearfacing carseat as he got to big for it.. he enjoys looking out of the window or talking to himself in he mirror

Mcarwood87 · 30/05/2019 06:43

Typing error on my post.. it should be
"my lb is in a rearfacing carseat"

SnugglySnerd · 30/05/2019 06:54

I got something from Kiddicare that strapped onto the back of the rear seat so dd was facing it. It was mirror with a plush surround and things that dangled. I don't think she could reach it but she could look at herself and watch the dangly things moving as we went along. Possibly she could kick them too, I can't remember!

Skiaddicted · 30/05/2019 06:57

Just remember soft toys are best as anything lose in the car will become a projectile in a crash so you don't want it to be heavy or hard

Teachermaths · 30/05/2019 07:04

Don't move him at 6 months Shock

He's far too young. Keep him in the group 0 seat as long as possible.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 30/05/2019 07:58

@Puddingsmummy I've double checked my manual this morning, it says handle back is important for safety in a collision, yours might be different but check your instruction manual just in case. Also definitely don't move a six month old into the next car seat size!

stucknoue · 30/05/2019 08:07

I know it's been a while but the handle is locked back during use. Check your manual (they are online) before you use it in the car again, my sil's is definitely back too (now)

SnugglySnerd · 30/05/2019 08:42

I was definitely told our is a roll bar. It must vary with different models.

bluechameleon · 30/05/2019 09:12

Definitely don't move at 6 months. DS1 was off the charts in size and stayed in his infant seat until a year old, when he was well into 18-24m clothes. DS2 is average sized and is just growing out of his at nearly 16m. They are the safest seats so use it for as long as you can.
