Can you train a dog to not bark?

I’m considering getting a puppy, however the breed I love apparently is prone to barking and can be quite yappy.

Can you train a dog not to do this even if by nature that’s what they’re like?

Wolfiefan not all dachshunds bark. We have a non barker, only heard him bark a handful of times and that's when somethings scared him. He doesn't bark out on walks or at the postman or anyone going past the house.
I appreciate that he is a weird guy though and totally not the normal Grin (he is also the absolute best dog in the world)

Our neighbours have a rescue dog which rarely barks. They were looking after someone else's dog that was really yappy. In a couple of hours they had it trained. Every time it barked they shook a t in with small coins in. It was like magic. For neighbour 's dogs I bought an anti barking device from Amazon. Best £15 I ever spent.

I have nothing against rescue dogs. I even volunteered at one shelter but a majority of the dogs there were not even up for adoption because of legal disputes with the previous owner.

I do want a specific dog breed and I’ve never once seen that one at a shelter otherwise I would consider it.

I just don’t like the mentality of if you want a dog then you’re a bag person for not getting one from a shelter.

If you want a specific breed do contact the breed club. There are breed specific rescues. There is a wolfhound rescue for example. They don’t advertise dogs available at all. (For various reasons.) Good luck.
I don’t think you’re a bald person to buy a pup at all. I did. But I do think it’s bloody hard not to end up buying from a rubbish breeder.

My behaviouralist says you can train a dog to stop barking but you it's very difficult to train them not to start in the first place (although this is partially breed depenedent as pps have said). But you have to be so vigilant and 'on it' and deal with every incident as and when it happend.

Hence I now have privacy film up at my big picture window...
