Dd would like a laptop for her birthday. It’s primarily for homework, but will likely be used for YouTube and music too. I have no idea about technology. I’m assuming she needs windows. I don’t understand speed/ storage/ processors. We have 2 printers (one wireless) but no pc/ laptop and I’m not sure if they’re compatible with everything. I’m looking at buying on very for the delivery as I can’t get to shops for health reasons atm. Can someone take a look and recommend something please?

What's your budget? :)

Soola · 29/05/2019 17:19

You will pay over the odds at Very.

I’ll have a look for you and get back.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 29/05/2019 17:24

Thanks. Yes, I wish I’d been organised and got it while I could still shop... but I’m on meds with way too many side effects to make it to a shop! Budget: not sure? I don’t want to pay for something with way more than she will use, but equally don’t want to get something that falls short of the mark. I guess it costs what it costs. £300 would be good, £200 would be amazing, £600 would be bearable with a lie down.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 29/05/2019 17:38

Thanks... I know very would charge more, but I’m confident in returns etc. Am trying to match the details of the ones you posted to ones there and my brain hurts! I honestly have no idea what I’m looking at!

How about a chromebook? They're used in schools so your daughter may know about them already. They're cheap because they have no internal storage, you store documents in google docs. If it's only for homework she won't need storage anyway.

disneyspendingmoney · 29/05/2019 17:44

I would recommend a Chromebook rather than windows or Mac based laptop.

  1. Most school stuff is done online
2 you can install Android apps 3 is WiFi connectivity is excellent
  1. Mac and Windows usb hubs work seamlessly including usb ethernet adapters
  2. cheap
6 cant play pc games 7 compartbility is fairly good 8 lots of updates from Google to improve the OS 9 if your an android phone user you can use the same account 10 Its as secure and virus free as personal common sense dictates

cons
1 bit shite with no wifi connectivity
2 can install Android apps
3 the really cheap ones are a bit plasticy.

They are getting better every day.

it's not good for high end video editing, image editing audio editing or software development

Unless your DD needs to use a specific desktop app Final Cut, Photoshop, Ableton or visual studio she needs to use, then I'd recommend it.

Microsoft office 365 works fine, HP WiFi laser printer work fine.

This Lenovo costs 169 GBP

I had a Chromebook a few years ago and was massively disappointed in it. It was slow, froze a fair bit and didn't really do enough for me. They're cheap for a reason and it's not just because they don't have much storage!

In my experience if you pay anything under about £400 you're not going to get anything very good. Cheap technology is generally cheap for good reason.

SuckingDieselFella · 29/05/2019 18:18

I had an Acer chromebook which didn't suit my needs but it would be pretty good for homework and youtube. A laptop at the same price would be useless, not even big enough to load word processing programmes.

SuckingDieselFella · 29/05/2019 18:20

PC World are doing a 90 day trial with chromebooks. If you don't like it they'll take it back.

Ok, so...
The majority think laptop not chrome book?
What gb/ tb do I need? Is gb or tb bigger?
What processor?
What os?
What memory?
What else do I need to consider?

I’m guessing she wants something that isn’t slow, can save stuff and has decent picture. Battery life of 5-6 hours is likely to be as much as/ more than she needs. Must be compatible with word/ PowerPoint etc for school, plus internet. If you can put android apps on she could add her Alexa (app won’t load on her rubbish phone). She might play app type games too, but that’s not the main point.

It's looking like a Windows 10 laptop then, an i3 8th gen CPU U or Y model with 8gb ram, something by Lenovo HP Acer Asus. They'll be rock solid.

Also look for grade A returns you can get a better laptop at a reduced price. Laptopsdirect does some very good deals.

Overall they are all pretty much similar at a £400 price point youd be hard pressed to get 16gb ram and a 1tb ssd.

If you want a Mac then you'll be looking at a second hand 5yo at around £500, even the newest cheapest one are nearly a grand.

Don't get anything with a celeron processor they end up chugging after a while, Look to see if it has an i3, i5 or if your lucky i7.

The speed is not that important for CPUs the GHz bit. you only need to care about that if your playing higher end games or doing a render in a video editor.

Battery life is very dependent on what your doing with the laptop it's screen brightness that's eats most if the battery.

At your price point see if you can get USB-c charging it means in practical terms you can use many powerbricks as a lot if the power jack's are proprietary and if you loose the brick they can be a pain in the arse to find a comparable one.

Is weight an issue? as 15 or 17 inch screen laptops can be quite hefty to lug to school. The sweetspot is13 inch, lower than that it gets a bit squinty.

Touchscreen as well can be a bit meh! in laptops nothing more annoying than someone leaning over your shoulder and dicking around with what your doing.
